First Seniors Expert Advisory Committee Members Announced

The OSC has announced the fifteen professionals and experts who will make up the first Seniors Expert Advisory Committee (SEAC). The expert committee will advise staff on securities-related policy and operational developments that impact older investors and will provide input into the OSC’s related education and outreach activities.

The Investor Office opened the Toronto Stock Exchange yesterday to mark "back to school" season for investors.

New Research on Retirement Security
 

Seniors are an extremely important and growing segment of investors whose needs and issues demand attention.

The Investor Office recently commissioned a national research study of Canadians 50 years of age on topics such as retirement readiness and anticipated retirement security. Among the findings, 43 percent of pre-retirees in Ontario believe they will be worse off financially in retirement.
 

 
 

Leslie Byberg was appointed as the Executive Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the OSC in June. The Investor Office recently sat down with her to discuss her priorities, new investor protection initiatives and the importance of considering the investor perspective.

Proposals to Enhance the Obligations of Advisors, Dealers and Representatives Toward Their Clients Comments due: September 30, 2016

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) – the umbrella organization of Canada’s provincial and territorial securities regulators that includes the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) – believe that the current regulatory framework requires improvements and that the status quo must change. The CSA has proposed a number of changes to improve the investor-advisor relationship. The OSC, along with most other CSA members, is also seeking comments on a proposed "best interest standard."
