World Investor Week
 

The second annual World Investor Week is underway!

The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is proud to participate in World Investor Week, a global campaign promoted by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection. It takes place from October 1 through 7, 2018. October is also Investor Education Month in Canada.

Tied to the important themes of World Investor Week, we've included investor education and protection tips in this edition of Investor News

 
World Investor Week
 

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), which includes the OSC, will mark Investor Education Month this October with a variety of activities designed to help investors achieve a greater understanding of how to grow and protect their investments. The CSA and its members are also supporting World Investor Week.

Always check the registration of any person or business trying to sell you an investment or give you investment advice. Seniors Expert Advisory Committee
 

The OSC recently announced the new membership of its Seniors Expert Advisory Committee (SEAC).

Comprised of 15 experts including leaders from the financial industry, investor and seniors advocates, the legal profession, and health and aging experts, the SEAC advises OSC staff on activities of the OSC designed for older investors. These include policy, operational, research, education and outreach initiatives. A key area of focus will be advising staff on the implementation of the OSC's Seniors Strategy, published in late March. Investor Advisory Panel
 

The OSC is inviting applications for membership on its independent Investor Advisory Panel (IAP), which advises and comments on proposed rules, policies and investor protection initiatives.

The IAP is an important voice for investors in the regulatory process, and new members will be selected to ensure that the panel continues to represent a broad range of relevant experience, skills, knowledge and perspectives. Members are appointed for terms of up to two years and will be compensated for their time in meeting the IAP’s mandate. A selection committee consisting of two Commissioners and a Vice-Chair will interview short-listed candidates. The Chair of the OSC will appoint the panel members based on the recommendations of the selection committee.

Osgoode Investor Protection Clinic
 

Osgoode Investor Protection Clinic

The Investor Protection Clinic, a joint initiative between Osgoode Hall Law School and FAIR Canada that was funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario, recently marked its one-year anniversary. Read their annual report summarizing their work in their inaugural year.

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) today published for comment Proposed National Instrument 52-112 Non-GAAP and Other Financial Measures Disclosure, which establishes disclosure requirements for issuers that disclose non-GAAP and other financial measures.

Proposed rules to prohibit certain embedded commissions

Comments due: December 13, 2018

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) published for comment a notice outlining proposed amendments that would prohibit investment fund managers from paying upfront sales commissions to dealers, and trailing commissions to dealers who do not make a suitability determination, such as order-execution-only dealers

KEY DATES

 

Investor Office Telephone Townhall

October 10, 2018

Telephone townhall are a way for the Investor Office to connect with thousands of Ontarians at a time. Telephone townhall work much like a call-in radio show where OSC staff provide information, answer questions and conduct live polls over the course of one hour.

The next telephone townhall is being held as part of Investor Education Month and will focus on how to spot some common investment scams. You can also ask OSC experts your investment and fraud-related questions.
