Alternative Mutual Funds

Alternative mutual funds are a type of mutual fund. Like a conventional mutual fund, an alternative mutual fund is a collection of investments owned by a group of investors and managed by a professional money manager. However, alternative mutual funds can invest in non-traditional investment assets or use complex investment strategies in ways that conventional mutual funds cannot.

ETF Facts

The Canadian Securities Administrators, which includes the OSC, recently launched an awareness campaign to encourage investors to read the Exchange-Traded Funds (ETF) Facts document.

Beginning December 10, 2018 every time you purchase an ETF, you'll receive a copy of ETF Facts within two business days of the purchase. This document summarizes key information about the ETF you've bought, including what the ETF is invested in, how they trade, their risk and fees.

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) published for comment Proposed National Instrument 52-112 Non-GAAP and Other Financial Measures Disclosure, which establishes disclosure requirements for issuers that disclose non-GAAP and other financial measures.

Proposed rules to prohibit certain embedded commissions

Comments due: December 13, 2018

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) published for comment a notice outlining proposed amendments that would prohibit investment fund managers from paying upfront sales commissions to dealers, and trailing commissions to dealers who do not make a suitability determination, such as order-execution-only dealers.

Proposed amendments to certain custody-related provisions

Comments due: December 24, 2018

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) published for comment certain custody-related provisions of National Instrument 31-103 Registration Requirements, Exemptions and Ongoing Registrant Obligations (NI 31-103) as a consequence of recent custody-related amendments to National Instrument 81-102 Investment Funds (NI 81-102) which were made as part of the "Modernization of Investment Fund Product Regulation -- Alternative Funds" project.

Proposed changes to clearing agency requirements

Comments due: January 19, 2019

The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) published for comment proposed amendments to National Instrument 24-102 Clearing Agency Requirements and proposed changes to Companion Policy 24-102 Clearing Agency Requirements.
