We caution investors to not make investment decisions based only on celebrity endorsements or affiliations.

You may have come across celebrities endorsing (or appearing to endorse) investments or products marketed as investments on social media, online ads or television. As with any investment, it’s a good idea to do your research, using reputable sources, before making a decision to better understand the features and risks of the potential investment.

It's important to remember that a celebrity endorsement does not guarantee specific investment returns. You should also be aware that fraudsters may use a celebrity's image or likeness without permission to sell you fake investment opportunities. Learn more

It's RRSP Season

We're in the final weeks of RRSP season: March 1, 2018 is the deadline for making an RRSP contribution for the 2017 tax year.

In our last issue of Investor News, we featured many of our resources related to RRSPs and saving for retirement. In case you missed it, catch up at this link.

If you're still deciding whether to set aside money for retirement, and if so, how much, visit our Planning for Retirement hub for tips on understanding the various aspects of saving for retirement and making informed investing decisions.

Tools and Calculators has many popular tools and calculators, including our RRSP Savings, Compound Interest, and TFSA calculators to help you plan for your retirement and other financial goals.

Our RRSP Savings Calculator can help you estimate how much your RRSP could be worth at retirement and how much income it could provide each year. While our TFSA Calculator can help you estimate the value of the investments in your TFSA when you’re ready to withdraw them, it also indicates how much in taxes you could potentially save. Disposition Effect

Disposition Effect

Do you tend to hold onto stocks or other investments long after they’ve started dropping in value, and try to make up the loss by selling other investments soon after they’ve increased in price? This could mean selling “winning” investments too soon and holding on to “losing” investments for too long. This is an example of the "disposition effect" and it could impact your investing goals.

Visit our Behavioural Insights hub to learn more about behavioural insights concepts such as the disposition effect, familiarity bias, short-termism and herd behaviour. You can also read the Investor Office report Behavioural Insights: Key Concepts, Applications and Regulatory Considerations (OSC Staff Notice 11-778) which describes key principles and concepts of behavioural insights, and examines how leading practitioners are using these insights to improve government policy and financial regulation.
