Hello! welcome to Dementia Awareness Week 2019!
Life with dementia is tough...There's no cure or magic pill, but we can all do our bit to make a difference. Everything from raising awareness and understanding about dementia to building friendships and links in our communities can help to change the world.
This year, we're asking people to do 1 thing to make a difference..... And you can start just by reading this short blog.
Raising awareness and understanding about dementia makes a huge difference to the lives of people with dementia, carers, families and friends. Dementia is the most feared and stigmatised condition in UK. This fuels social isolation, makes dementia symptoms worse and makes life even harder for carers by cutting people off from normal life and friends and undermining confidence. Understanding dementia helps to reduce stigma.

Building friendships and community linksis a direct way to help people feel part of the community, to feel valued and included. Often friends can fall away and everyday activities like shopping or going out for a walk can become difficult and anxiety provoking. We can all make our communities, shops and open places feel more friendly with a smile, giving people a bit more time, being kind and patient with each other. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in your community. Check our Facebook Pagefor events, groups and activities including Dementia Friendly Communities, groups for people with dementia and carers. friends and family. Or get in touch with DFEL and have a chat.
Changing the world- Over the next few months, we'll be arranging discussions about dementia in different communities. Keep an eye open for dates, and get in touch if you can help in your community.
Reading this blog is one way you have made a difference. Please spread the word and encourage others to do their bit too.
Thank you for your time and attention.
