It’s been a bit of a year for us all.  For DFEL, we went from running Friendship Groups, Gatherings and community workshops to set up a Meeting Centre in Musselburgh to a hyper-local focus on supporting people in very practical ways in our community. Oh, and life on Zoom.
We’ve been running Friendship Groups on Zoom since May. Over 8 months, we’ve travelled Scotland and the world, past and present and met artists, musicians, gannets and dogs!  Sessions are shared with Groups, care homes and Day Centres on Youtube and we’ve put together a special Christmas Compilation (click to watch) to send to folks as a Christmas DVD. In August we ran our first Dementia Friendly Yoga Training on Zoom – Yoga Moments and in November we had the last Dementia Best Practice Training session with Day Centres, it’s always so inspiring to spend time with Day Centres…
Celebrating Communities
is our new project for 2021 and it’s all about fun and joy. Inspired by the fantastic way Communities supported each other during Covid.  Celebrating Communities brings together community groups, organisations and national projects to develop community-led events and projects to bring fun and joy.  We all need a look forward in 2021 and some hope. This project is about serious fun!
We’ve had a really positive and enthusiastic response from communities, including Health and Well Being Groups/Associations, Community Councils, Care Homes, Day Centres and a whole range of organisations and individuals. People want to have fun and they want to keep and build on the friendships and connections that communities built over Covid.   This project will help them do that.
DFEL also built relationships over Covid, we worked closely with a range of national projects bringing national and local together, blending real and virtual worlds. We too want to grow the seeds we’ve planted.  Partners currently include:
        Emily - Scottish Seabird Centre
Suzie - Hearts & Minds
Tim - Supersum Works
Sam - Edinburgh Leisure

Carla (& Billy the dog) - Dogs for Good

Lisa - Dance Health Manager - Scottish Ballet
In January we’ll be creating spaces for creative conversations to help great ideas happen in the real world. We’ll help people connect and share community and national inspiring work and experience, build relationships, understanding and community capacity.  Initially we’ll be on Zoom, but when it’s safe, in the real world. We’re also looking at monthly workshops or talks, along the lines of our Community Matters series that was due to start in April 2020……..
Celebrating Communities will support a wide range of H&SCP priorities and our usual work - Dementia Friendly Communities, Friendship Groups and Meeting Centre development. And address issues like Digital Inclusion.
Next Steps: Conversations start in January, initially on Zoom. If you or someone you know would like to join us or find out more, please ask them to get in touch or Doodle:
Thank you for the support you’ve given DFEL, it is very much appreciated. We look forward to working together and serious fun.
In the meantime, we wish you and yours a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and hope for 2021. Thanks to Dunbar Grammar School for the fabulous Christmas cards designed this year...

Take care stay safe
