DFEL  Newsletter April/May 2019

Hello! Welcome to the latest newsletter.  At our Spring Gathering, we discussed the new East Lothian Health & Social Care Strategy (you can read the strategy HERE). We met with senior staff from the Health & Social Care Partnership the next day to agree how we can work together to make the strategy work for everyone. You can read a full report of the Gathering  HERE

The new Health & Social Care Strategy has 6 change areas: Primary Care, Adults with Complex Needs, Mental Health and Substance Misuse, Shifting the Balance of Care, Re-provisioning and Carers.

Dementia is a ‘golden thread’ covered in every area of work.   Specific actions for dementia include:

  • Reviewing & developing Post Diagnostic Support,
  • Developing options for specialist dementia units & a care home
  • Reviewing & developing the dementia care pathway
  • Reviewing the use of Mid & East Lothian hospitals
  • Dementia Friendly Communities.

We wanted more focus on people and communities. Access to GPs and Health Centres is a priority and we need a clearer ‘pathway’ for dementia, better information and more opportunities to support each other. We were glad to see mention of Dementia Friendly Communities. We want the Strategy to bring people together and link to transport, housing and other strategies.

We took priorities to Trish Leddy, Group Service Manager and Nicola Cochrane, Service Manager Adult & Older Adult Mental Health, Psychological Therapies & Substance Misuse from the East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership.

We said we were keen to be support the Strategy to make it work for everyone. We agreed to work together to:

  • Set up a Carers Forum, building on the last year’s event
  • Set up an East Lothian planning group on Meeting Centres
  • Connect with all Change Boards, including re-provisioning and primary care
  • Support the review of Post Diagnostic Support
  • Develop DFEL as a network and a resource
  • Organise roundtables/events on key issues such as housing, care, psycho-social therapies, carers and caring etc

The  conversation continues at the ELP Spring Forum on 27th April. If you’d like to attend,  contact cgoodwin@eastlothian.gov.uk or contact me.

Many, many thanks to everyone who came along and put your views across. Watch this space.

Cheers,

Sue
