LITERACY MATTERS TO...  Bill Helker, longtime tutor
A picture of volunteer tutor Bill, his wife Carol and student Fadumo
“I had no idea what was going on,” volunteer Bill Helker says good-naturedly when asked about his first citizenship tutoring experience in 2010. “But my student and I learned together.”

Six years later, Bill Helker spends several days per week helping adult students prepare for the naturalization test – the final step in the process to earn U.S. citizenship. On top of that, Bill mentors three other citizenship volunteers at our Open Door Learning Center - Northside. It’s a full schedule for a retiree – and he has no plans to stop any time soon!

What are Bill, his wife Carol, and Fadumo celebrating in this photo? Does he have advice for future tutors? What does he say is the best gift he could receive? Read on to find out!
