Catching up with former student Tawanna
Celebrating any graduates this season? We are, too!

Our former GED student Tawanna (pictured above with her GED teacher Lindsey Cermak and with her children) just graduated from Minneapolis Community and Technical College with an Associate's Degree in Culinary Arts. Congratulations, Tawanna!

The road to her diploma was not without its obstacles. As a mother of two young children, Tawanna already had a lot on her plate, but she knew she needed to start working toward something bigger-- for her kids and for herself. After struggling with the math portion of the GED test, Tawanna started attending our Open Door Learning Center. There she found a strong support system and the motivation within herself to persevere-- studying for and eventually passing the GED, enrolling in college and becoming the first person in her family to receive a college degree.

It's a big achievement to say the least, but Tawanna's not done. She wants to continue her education and one day run her own business. Judging from her track record, we're pretty sure she's got what it takes.

'Tis the season... for gardening!
The students at Open Door Learning Center - Arlington Hills need a few things to help keep their garden lush.
  • 100-ft garden hose
  • watering cans
  • wire cutter
  • 2 heavy duty tape measures
  • large food scale
  • gallon Ziploc bags
The garden is used as a teaching tool-- students plan what to grow, fill out work orders, and document and weigh all produce picked each week. Sharing in the harvest is a delicious bonus!

Donate today and help the garden (and the students' knowledge) grow!
