A tale of two teachers
Rachel began her career as Norma's student...

In 2009, before becoming our Open Door Preschool teacher, Rachel Lyness was beginning her student teaching practicum at an elementary school in St. Paul. When she entered the kindergarten classroom of longtime teacher Norma Jorgensen, she was immediately struck by how amazing it was. It embodied everything she had learned about in her classes a model kindergarten classroom.

Norma’s principal had suggested she take on a mentor role, and after reading Rachel’s early childhood education philosophy, Norma knew they’d be a perfect match. She instantly noticed Rachel’s warm, friendly manner and her ability to genuinely engage with the children at their level.

Then they traded roles

On her last day of student teaching, Rachel encouraged Norma to volunteer with her in the future. It was an offer Norma couldn’t refuse, and when she retired in 2014, she started volunteering in Rachel’s preschool classroom.

They may have traded roles, but the pair continues to inspire and learn from each other. Find out what they’ve learned, what they admire most about each other and more.
