Successful #WMHD16 event in the European parliament 

On 10th October MHE held an event in the European Parliament to celebrate World Mental Health Day. With over 80 participants in the room, and 5000 watching on the Facebook live stream, the event was an unprecedented success. European Commissioner for Health Vytenis Andriukaitis stayed for a big part of the discussions and expressed strong interest and commitment to the mental health of young people. MHE in Vilnius for a two-days consultation with the UN Special Rapporteur for Health 

MHE was in Vilnius to participate in a select group of experts meeting on mental health and human rights. The special consultation was co-organised by the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health Mr. Dainius Pūras and MHE Lithuanian member organisation Mental Health Perspectives. MHE Senior Policy Advisor Jan Pfeiffer and Policy Manager Alva Finn shared their expertise on deinstitutionalisation and the role of stakeholders in promoting human rights-based mental health care.

Mental health days in Luxembourg 
 
MHE participated in the European Governmental Expert Group on mental health in Luxembourg on October 6-7. Policy Manager Alva Finn was asked to present on the thematic network on mental health which MHE leads with EUFAMI and to introduce the Each of Us campaign. The meeting was coupled with the first edition of the EU Compass for Mental Health where Alva participated in a stakeholder panel on the follow up of the Joint Action and the Framework for Action. The Compass is an invaluable platform to collect, exchange and analyse information and best practices with a wide range of actors involved in mental health.

The map of Europe according to how much governments care about mental health

Every year, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) publishes an index of 30 European countries which measures their policy commitments and initiatives around mental health. The aim of this comparison is to contribute to the debate on integration by showing where the strengths and weaknesses lie in individual countries, and therefore where policy improvements may be needed.According to the following index, Germany, the UK and Denmark rank first. World Mental Health Day: the Each of Us campaign meets with success in Greece 

MHE Greek member organisation the Society of Social Psychiatry and Mental Health has worked hard to translate and promote the Each of Us campaign in Greece for World Mental Health Day. EKPSE has organised activities around Athens and its periphery, to raise awareness of mental health problems. The campaign and activities have received great support from people across the Greek capital city, and received a lot of attention from national Greek media. Read the Huffington Post article here. Hand in Hand 40 Year Anniversary event in Gent: last chance to register! 

On November 8, MHE Belgian member organisation VZW Hand in Hand will celebrate its 40 Year Anniversary with a conference entitled 2017: The end of Sheltered Housing?The event will gather health professionals, people with lived experience of mental distress, social workers and other experts to discuss solution to improve mental health care and the future of housing projects. The conference will take place in Gent, Belgium in both Dutch and English. Click below for more information and registration.

Mental health support to migrants and refugees  is not a luxury, it's a priority

MHE just released a position paper on the need for mental health and psychosocial support for migrants and refugees in Europe. The paper explores the human rights, economic and social rationale for providing mental health support to migrants and refugees in Europe and warns Member States of the possible consequences of inaction. The position paper has already been featured in the EU Reporter magazine and Vita international with more articles to be published in the coming days.

MHE Director in Gastein to raise mental health profile

Akiko Hart attended the European Health Forum Gastein, the biggest health-related event in Europe and a meeting point for high-level experts and policy makers from different fields within the health sector. Akiko attended various panels and workshops and made the case for mainstreaming mental health in wider health policy.

MHE in Sofia to discuss access to mental health care for young people 

MHE was invited to deliver a presentation on young people and mental health at the European Youth Forum and FES Foundation "Social Rights in times of crisis: the youth perspective" conference in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event was a key milestone in MHE’s lifespan focus this year, and an ideal opportunity to brainstorm with young people on how to improve and design appropriate mental health services for young people across Europe.

Alltrials Campaign publishes roadmap to transparency 

As part of its work on transparency, MHE is member of the Alltrials campaign, which calls for all past and present clinical trials to be registered and their full methods and summary results reported. Alltrials just published an interesting roadmap on what organisations can do to encourage transparency in their sector. MHE encourages its member organisations to have a look at this roadmap to see what they can do to push for trial transparency.

European Parliament publishes briefing note on mental health

The European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS) is an internal EU parliament service providing  research and analytical support to MEPs and other staff in the Parliament. Recently, the EPRS published an briefing note on mental health untitled "Spotlight on mental health in Europe" which outlines  facts and figures on the mental health situation in Europe.
