The Gender and Disaster Pod and Chair of the Emergency Management Conference organising committee, Deputy Chief Fire Office at Fire Rescue Victoria, Mark Swiney, today announced this year’s presenter of the Claire Zara Memorial Oration, Professor Lori Peek.
Lori Peek is professor in the Department of Sociology and director of the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado Boulder. She studies vulnerable populations in disaster and is author of ‘Behind the Backlash: Muslim Americans after 9/11’, co-editor of ‘Displaced: Life in the Katrina Diaspora’, and co-author of ‘Children of Katrina’.
Dr Peek also helped develop and write school safety guidance for the nation, which resulted in the publication of FEMA’s Safer, Stronger, Smarter: A Guide to Improving School Natural Hazard Safety.

She has conducted field investigations in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the BP Oil Spill, the Christchurch earthquakes, the Joplin tornado, Superstorm Sandy, and Hurricane Matthew.

Her presentation at EMC will be ‘What Kids Can Do! Lessons from Research with Young People in Disasters’.

The Memorial Oration is in honour of Claire Zara, who, amongst many other achievements, co-founded the GAD Pod and played a central role in the establishment of the Victorian Gender and Disaster Taskforce in January 2014. She passed away in early 2015, and has been honoured at EMC every year since. Our sincere thanks to Mark Swiney, Tony Poole and Steve O'Malley for their enduring support in hosting the Oration.
