National GEM Guidelines

The GAD Taskforce was funded last year by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services to create draft Gender and Emergency Management Guidelines. This program has now been funded by National Emergency Management Projects (NEMP) to expand the guidelines to a national scale. The team are in the middle of the consultation period of the project. They initially collected over sixty Survey Monkey responses from those in the Emergency Management sector around Australia on their opinions about the development of national gender and emergency management guidelines. Last week, WHIN and WHGNE presented at the Recovery Sub Committee (RSC) and the Social Recovery Reference Group (SRRG) in Darwin which are attended by key emergency management leaders from around Australia and New Zealand. The guidelines are now being revised based on the feedback received from the groups and a summit launching the guidelines is planned for 2017.

Contribution to Sendai Framework

The GAD Pod is also contributing to the UN Sendai Framework Words Into Action document. This paper is part of an internationally-focused initiative on civil society, volunteers, and organized voluntary organizations. We have been asked to lend our expertise on how women’s organisations relate to and operate within emergency management, and how women’s needs in a disaster context can be better addressed through education and training, financial support, and support with family and relationship issues.
