Women in Fire and Emergency Leadership Roles Report

In 2015, the GAD Pod was commissioned by the Department of Environment, Land, Water, and Planning (DELWP) to research the barriers that exist for women taking on leadership roles in fire and emergency management. It involved approximately 500 staff from DELWP and partner organisations (Parks Victoria, VicForests, and Melbourne Water).Staff either participated in an online Survey Monkey, a one-to-one interview, or were part of a focus group.

DELWP and the GAD Pod will be presenting the findings to the 2016 AFAC Conference later this year in Queensland.

The final report can be found here (90 pages). Or you could read the summary report here (18 pages).

Monash Disaster Resilience Initiative Forum

We are very pleased to report that the Monash Disaster Resilience Initiative Forum will include a presentation on the DELWP/GAD Pod report as part of ‘What’s New’ in the disaster resilience space locally, nationally and internationally. Key GAD Pod researcher Alyssa Duncan will present the findings and suggestions to improve the gender balance. Sharon MacDonnell, Senior Advisor from DEWLP will outline what led the Department to commission the research.

This important forum will feature presentations from the Director General of Emergency Management Australia and the Director the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience. At the state level, the new EM frameworks, such as the Victorian Social Cohesion Framework, will be explained.
