Men's Experience of Disaster

The article 'Men and Disaster: Men's experience of Black Saturday and the aftermath' was published in the Australian Journal of Emergency Management by GAD Pod researchers Claire Zara, Deb Parkinson, Alyssa Duncan and Kiri Joyce. It discusses the harmful effects of gendered stereotypes and expectations of masculinity on coping mechanisms and decision-making of men.

Men after Natural Disaster Training

The GAD Pod has published the Men after Natural Disaster training package. It is designed to provide emergency services, recovery workers and community members with an understanding of how masculinity is framed internationally and in Australia, and explore how this concept of masculinity was challenged during and after Black Saturday. It assists participants to identify the risks and harms of hegemonic masculinity, and identify practical ways to reduce these harms in both disater planning and response.

It was funded under the broader Lessons in Disaster project, which came to a close last month. The project included three other training packages: Family violence after Natural Disasters, Gender Equity after Disasters and Living LGBTI in Disaster.

It can be found on the GAD Pod website.
