News at the gardens

Dear Jane Street Garden supporters!

As always a huge thank you to all garden supporters for your commitment and hard-work at the gardens.  It has been amazing to see everything come together.  Piece by piece together we are creating a thriving ecosystem and developing a welcoming and warm communal space to share skills and knowledge.

Here is a quick snapshot of some things happening down at the gardens:

Community Partnership Program with Reclink has come to an end

Our Community Partnership Program with Reclink and Micah Projects ended mid January.  This program was focused around up-skilling those experiencing unemployment with news skills in gardening and carpentry to increase their employability.  This program has been integral to the developments that have taken place down at the gardens.  Here are some of the highlights:
  • New grand entrance archway (with heaps of vertical growing space!)
  • Secured and functional greenhouse to sell organic seedlings
  • Extended our sheltered social area for more workshops
  • Greatly increased the organic matter and health of our soils
  • Built new garden beds - including the entire length of our perimeter borders
  • Created a system of recycling local community waste and coordinated daily collections
  • Established new lotus and frog ponds
A very big thank to all the participants for your hard work and Reclink and Micah Projects for setting up this program at the gardens.

New Lotus, Fish and Frog Ponds

A huge thank you to FJ for the donation of our new lotus pond, fish and frog ponds.  The lotus's are starting to come into bloom now, so drop down to the gardens and take in their wonderful fragrance in the coming weeks.  They also create a beautiful place to ground and mediate by after a days work in the office.

Splitting of our Native Bee Hives and the most delicious honey!

Sugarbag Bees helped us with splitting our native bee hives and created two new hives. The honey that was collected from these hives were so divine! There are many great advantages in adopting a native bee hive in your backyard garden including pollinating your edible crops, providing rich medicinal honey and supporting native bee populations and local ecosystems. Check out the following for more information:

Fundraiser at Grilled

Our fundraiser jar at Grilled is filling up fast. There are a couple of days left to add your token and help us get the fundraising bonus for filling our jar! Bring your friends and family for a meal and a fun way to support our local community garden.

New Animal Mascots

We have some new pelican, duck and chicken mascots down at the gardens thanks to Bridget's generous donations.  The gardens are starting to get quite a bit of a homely feel to them now.

Totally Wild Filming

Totally Wild will be attending our community working bee this coming Tuesday the 2nd of February (pending that weather stays clear for us!).  We would love for you to be involved! Please come and join us down at the gardens for our working bee - and perhaps even have a say in the clip!
