Happy New Year! We at CPFH welcome 2016 with some exciting new programs in our center, and a commitment to increasing our presence in the  community.  We know that statistically speaking, almost 20% of women experience postpartum depression and/or anxiety after having a baby, which means that there are thousands of new moms in the Houston area who need our services.  Our goal is to reach as many of them as possible, and increase access to mental health care for all who need it.We appreciate YOUR help in getting the word out about the services we offer at CPFH, and our goal of helping all new mothers be healthy and happy. With that in mind, our topic this month is mindfulness.

Mindfulness--What is it?  It is a trending topic all around in social media, yoga circles, self-improvement lingo, and in therapeutic practices.  As a mom, you may wonder:—How does it work? How do I do it?  And Can It Help Me?

Mindfulness is about learning to be aware of the present—living in the NOW by engaging the mind and body with breathing techniques, the use of our five senses, and  reducing our brain “noise and clutter” with relaxation exercises.  Mindfulness practice is intended to be calming, stress reducing, and revitalizing.  A regular practice of mindfulness and meditation helps us create emotional resources to manage symptoms of anxiety and depression, and actually improve our moods.  The more we practice, the better we get at calming our bodies and minds, and better handling whatever stress we are experiencing.  At CPFH, mindfulness can be extremely beneficial in helping our clients learn to relax and reduce symptoms associated with the stress of being a new parent, and the common symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety.

One of the challenges to living more mindfully, is the abundance of information and images we are constantly exposed to through entertainment and media.  Learning to unplug, clear your mind, and give your brain a chance to rest and restore is a challenge worth pursuing.  So, at the risk of sounding contradictory to the suggestion to unplug, here are some resources which might help you increase your own practice of mindfulness:

1) Top-rated Smart Phone Apps – Calm, Headspace, Insight Timer

You have meditation tools literally at the tip of your hands with these well-rated apps!

2) Mandala Coloring Books

Coloring is not just for kids! Therapists often recommend these coloring books as a way for clients to relax, focus, and be in the present.  There are all types of Mandala books found at your local Wal-Mart, craft stores like Michael's, Joann's, and of course, Amazon!  They are fairly inexpensive as well costing less than $10!  Color and relax away!

Art Therapy is a tried and true relaxation practice that is really catching on. 

3) Wherever You Are, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn. 

The author is the founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.  He travels across the country hosting workshops on mindfulness. 

So, enjoy exploring mindfulness in the New Year, and as always, “be well!”


In 2013, Kim Jones received her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from University of Houston Clear Lake.  Her specific areas of focus in her studies and internship included Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy, as well as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.   After graduate school, Kim served as Director of Teen and Family Services of The Woodlands, during which time she gained extensive experience working with adolescents  and parents with a variety of presenting problems.  However, with the birth of her own son in 2014, Kim became increasingly interested in supporting new moms and couples in successfully working through pregnancy and postpartum issues.  
Kim became a certified Gottman Bringing Baby Home educator in 2014, and was delighted to join the Center for Postpartum Family Health in May of 2015.  Kim believes very deeply in the importance of our work at CPFH, and views it as an honor to support new parents in their recovery from perinatal mood disorders or adjustment difficulties. Kim also enjoys community outreach through speaking to local mothers' groups or other organizations about postpartum mental health.   
In addition to her work with perinatal clients, Kim also enjoys working with individuals and couples who struggle with depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, substance abuse, and various other presenting problems.   
Kim lives in Bellaire with her son and her husband.  In her free time, Kim enjoys being outdoors and spending time with friends and family.

When a baby arrives, everything changes.  Discover how to keep your relationship healthy and happy after bringing baby home!
The Bringing Baby Home (BBH) program, based on the research of Drs. John and Julie Gottman, is valuable for both expectant couples and parents of infants and toddlers.  Facilitated by clinicians from the Center for Postpartum Family Health (CPFH), this new couples workshop will help you to successfully navigate your way through the transition to parenthood by learning how to increase relationship satisfaction between parents, decrease postpartum depression, and parent together while meeting the emotional and psychological needs of your child.

Our six week program will take place on Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. starting January 31st – March 13th, 2016 *excluding February 7th, and will be held at Chapelwood United Methodist Church.  Cost is $150.  To reserve your space or for more info, please contact Tricia Miller at 832-341-1870 or
