BAPA WEEDING WEDNESDAYS. Public spaces throughout the neighborhood have been targeted for some attention this summer on BAPA Weeding Wednesdays. The 19th Ward Youth Foundation presents free Family Nights Out in the Parks this month. Dates and events are:  Movie in the Park, “Annie,” Thurs., Aug. 4, dusk, McKiernan Park, 10714 S. MS Slugfest & Home Run Derby

Registration is open for the 16th Annual MS Slugfest and Home Run Derby, held Sat., Aug. 6 at Mount Greenwood Park, 3721 W. 111th St. The 16-inch softball tournament hosts 32 teams each playing two games. Proceeds benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis, Greater Illinois Chapter’s research, programs and services. Info/registration here.

Quilter’s Trunk Wins Small Business Boost!

The votes are in for the Small Business Boost, and The Quilter's Trunk won! The local shop was one of four finalists for the award sponsored by NBC 5 Chicago and The Hartford to recognize small businesses that hire and source locally and give back to their community. The Quilter’s Trunk will win $2,500 and be featured on NBC 5 Chicago. Retracing Dr. King’s March

On Sat., Aug. 6, more than 700 area residents will kick off a day-long festival commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s freedom march to Marquette Park by retracing the march and celebrating the efforts of civil rights activists, religious and community leaders, community members and institutions to create a more just city. Plastic Bag Ban Phase 2 Begins Aug. 1

On Aug. 1, the second phase of the City of Chicago's Plastic Bag Ban will be implemented and enforced. Smaller chain and franchise retailers with floor space less than 10,000 square feet will be required to come into compliance. Stores that provided its customers with carryout bags before the ban will only be able to provide reusable bags, recyclable paper bags or commercially compostable plastic bags. The ban does not apply to any dine-in or take-out restaurant or small independent or non-franchise stores. The City's Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection will host a workshop regarding the new laws Wed., Aug. 10, 3 to 4:30 p.m., City Hall, Room 805.

Art Walk Call for Artists

Artists interested in participating in the 2016 Beverly Art Walk can apply through Aug. 1. The event will be held Sat., Oct. 1, 12 to 7 p.m. Info and applications here.

RHS Seeks Donation for Garage/Book Sale

Ridge Historical Society will host its annual garage and book sale in the fall, and is accepting donations of housewares, home goods, tools, jewelry, and books. Clothing will not be accepted. Donations are tax deductible and proceeds from the sale go towards the preservation and historical research efforts of the society. Info: 773-881-1675 or

22nd District's National Night Out Against Crime

The 22nd District will host National Night Out Against Crime, Tues., Aug. 2, 5 to 8 p.m., at the station, 1900 W. Monterey Ave. The family-friendly event features food, fun and games and a bounce house. Artists are invited to create sidewalk chalk murals for the event.
