Hey <<First Name>>,
I'm glad you're here again!
I've had a kind of crappy, kind of overwhelming week, with a little bit of fun thrown in there. Overall, a solid 6/10.
I'm coming close to my one year anniversary of working in government! Last week my director congratulated me during a meeting and I said, "what, why?" and he said, "Oh, you didn't receive this email I just received? It says you're officially a permanent employee now!" Apparently, any time over the last 10 months I could have been canned with barely a moment's notice. But I survived! Now they can never get rid of me.
I miss the comfort zone of freelancing: the days of being paid to draw pictures. But I'm really appreciating the joy of having work/life balance and having a team at work to back me up when shit hits the fan. The team-wins of my work today far outweigh the joys of solo-wins of freelancing for me. And a team-loss is far more manageable than a solo-loss.
Even still, it's been a challenging week at work, where I had two very big meetings where I felt brain-foggy overall and I let my public-speaking nerves get the better of me. I'm still feeling imposter syndrome whenever someone more senior than me asks me for my opinion or a decision.
I finally had some relief last night when I went to my first comics-making class! I signed up for the night class at the local art college a few months ago thinking it might be a good way to stretch some right-brain muscle. And it was! I spent 3 hours drawing in a comix jam format, which was entirely new to me and basically improv theatre but drawing.
Here's what it looked like at the end of the night:
Other creative pursuits I've recently finished/started: quilts! Finally finished this one I started in the spring and kept procrastinating:
And beginning my next project, which involves some vintage car show tees... more to come on that next time!

🎨 When to add colour to your design. This article mostly focuses on web-related stuff, but I think the charts will be interesting to anyone if you are into colour theory and how colours make us feel.
📰The phenomenon of "some personal news!" on twitter. I see this all the time, but I don't think I've ever used it. All my tweets are personal news! Which makes it awkward whenever someone from work follows me.

👍 Shoutout to all the late-bloomers: it's never too late for your career to peak.
🙃What sets you off, according to your Meyers-Briggs personality type. Mine is inefficiency. Which is disturbingly accurate.
🤔However, maybe the Meyers-Briggs test is all hogwash? This new research on the four personality types is really interesting.
👏Huge fan of these wheelchair cover designs!
🙏 What to do when your kid draws on the sofa. Hilarious and so refreshing.
Recommended Listening & Watching:
I'm a big fan of the CBC podcast, Uncover: Escaping NXIVM. We listened to the first few episodes on our road trip earlier this month and I had to pause it at one point because I suddenly understood how easily someone could be tricked into joining a cult. Then I made my partner promise me he'd stop me if I ever started to consider joining a cult. Which is a weird promise, but you know.
If you read all the way to the end:
Even though I'm in Canada, I'm still feeling really impacted by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's hearing. I haven't been able to bring myself to listen to that much of it because I cannot stop thinking about all the women in my life who've experienced a similar kind of pain and humiliation. Dr. Ford's courage is something that will stick with me forever.
