Hey!

This week I had a bunch of fails.

While it kind of sucks, none of my failures were particularly damaging or difficult. More like, "well, that sucks. On to the next thing". My biggest fail this week was buying a bridesmaid dress secondhand off of someone on kijiji (the Canadian Craigslist).

Here's the deal: my sister asked me to be maid-of-honour at her wedding and gave me instructions to get a "sage" green dress. Have I ever told you that I really dislike shopping? I bought a new pair of jeans last week for the first time in like 4 years. I digress. So, not wanting to spend a lot of money or a lot of time in a bridal store, I decided to get creative.

I figured that SOMEONE would have to already have what I was looking for and not want it anymore so I started browsing kijiji. I was super pleased with myself when I came across an ad for a ✅new-with-tags, ✅sage green, ✅size 8 bridesmaid dress. So I messaged this girl and she didn't message me back. So I messaged her AGAIN a week later and she wrote me back within the hour.

The next day, I met her in the lobby of my office building and gave her a $50 bill for a bag of pleated green polyester. Not promising, but it looked cute in the picture so I was still optimistic although slightly less optimistic.

It was sleeting and raining outside so I walked home from the bus stop with the dress tucked safely under my arm and shielded it like a baby.

I got home tried on the dress, and...

IT WAS TERRIBLE.

It was probably the least flattering piece of clothing I've ever put on. My own reaction when I looked in the mirror was basically like,

Anyways, so I called it a failure and texted my sister a picture before offically throwing in the towel. And while it sucks that it didn't work out, there's opportunity in this failure. I can:

1. Try to sell it on kijiji again, this time for $60 and make a $10 profit.
2. Cut the bottom half of the dress off and make it into a skirt (the bottom was actually pretty cute).
3. This whole exercise has really inspired me to make my own dress. I'm really into the Kielo Wrap Dress pattern, which is a beginner-friendly pattern for a relatively newbie like me.

If I didn't buy this crap dress, I wouldn't have all these options! Look at all this potential!

Recommended reading this week:

🐎I was listening to a podcast a while ago and the hosts were talking about "horse girls" and saying that basically, everyone knows that one girl from elementary school who was obsessed with horses. I mean, I was definitely obsessed with the Pony Pals books when I was 7, but I wasn't a horse girl. I still loved this article on how to dress like an honest-to-god horse girl.

🌱The new IKEA wellness collection is so good. I'm into it.

👔Do you have a personal work uniform? I tend to wear some combination of black pants, black/grey/pale colour blouse, grey/black cardigan but I'd find it boring if I went any stricter than that!

👍The lazy person's guide to self-improvement is my kind of self-improvement guide.

Recommended Listening & Watching:

Ok, you guys, take this rec with a big grain of salt because I haven't actually listened to it yet, but there's podcast I heard advertised on Forever 35 called By the Book. Every two weeks, two comedians live by the rules of a different self-help book and then report back on how it worked out. This sounds so good.

If you read all the way to the end:

I'm really into sewing lately! I just finished this weird little wall-hanging project and this weekend I'm starting on this dress pattern. YAY, hobbies!

xoxo,
