I got up at 6 AM to bake a cake this morning.

I get up at 6 most days so I can get ready for work at a non-frantic pace, but today's a holiday, so I should probably be sleeping in.

I committed to bringing a cake to family supper tonight, but I also committed to hanging out with friends last night after work and helping some friends move apartments today before supper. I didn't want to ditch any of these commitments to bake, so 6 AM cake baking it is!

When I was a freelancer, my time was a lot more flexible. I would have taken yesterday afternoon off to bake a cake and then did some work over the weekend to catch up on client requests. However, when you work in a job, you can't just be like, "see ya, boss, gotta bake a cake!"

As I'm writing you this email, it's 7:15 AM, I've just taken the cake out, I have the icing made, and I've eaten 3 handfuls of jelly beans to keep me awake. It's probably time for coffee!

Recommended reading this week:

📚I just finished reading Text Me When You Get Home by Kayleen Schaefer and if you're looking for a feel-good non-fiction read about female friendships, this is a good one. My favourite quote is from Oprah's bestie Gayle King,

"Who doesn't want to be her best friend? ... I never feel like I'm in her shadow. I feel I'm in her light, that's how I look at it."

🍟Jaqueline Novak on fries is everything.

👫A true story of a game of "tag" that's been going on for 30 (!) years, is becoming a movie! It sounds so goofy and fun, I can't wait.

💼Perfect satire: "I'm going to close this deal using business words I've heard men yell in airports".

📺Did you watch pre-Sabrina Melissa Joan Hart in Clarissa Explains it All as a kid? Here's a deep dive on Clarissa's crazy bedroom and why it was so easy for her best friend to climb in her window all the time.

Recommended Listening & Watching:

A couple weeks ago I recommended the By the Book podcast here while admitting that I hadn't even actually listened to it yet. Well, I've finally listened to it and it's GREAT. I love the format of how they dedicate 1 episode to talking about how they lived by the rules of a self-help book and whether it was good or bad, then in the next episode they respond to listener feedback.

If you read all the way to the end:

I'm having trouble with too much screen time making me feel anxious lately. I don't want to go into too much detail right now, but I'm finding doing things with my hands like baking at 6 AM, making a dress last week, and working on learning some new embroidery techniques really, really helpful. Sometimes I feel like looking at screens is ALL I do, so finding other hobbies that don't tempt me to check my email really helps me focus on being in the moment.
