RALPH PUGAY
New Releases

Ralph Pugay, Situational Study With Basketball, lithograph, edition of 14, 22.5 x 28.25 inches, $900

Crow's Shadow is excited to announce two new editions available from Ralph Pugay. During his time as an Artist-in-Residence last August, he completed a monoprint series, Ecstatic dancers in landscape, as well as two approvals-to-print for lithograph editions, Situational Study with Basketball, and Nude Runner Study
You can watch Ralph's Artist Talk on YouTube where he discusses his process and the work he made while at Crow's Shadow.

Ralph Pugay holds a BA and MFA in Contemporary Art Practice from Portland State University and is a residency graduate from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Other residencies include the Rauschenberg Foundation at Captiva Island, the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, and Creative Exchange Lab through Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. Pugay’s awards include a Ford Family Foundation Rauschenberg Fellowship, Betty Bowen Award from the Seattle Art Museum, Oregon Arts Commission Fellowship, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Award.

I treat the images I compose as if they are made up of a language that can be mistranslated, misguidedly synthesized, or over-literalized; providing moments where viewers might catch a glimpse of their own preconceptions by way of encountering what seems familiar.

EMILY ARTHUR
Next Artist-in-Residence

Later in May, we will be welcoming artist Emily Arthur to the studio for two weeks. Arthur fluidly intermingles multiple techniques in her active studio practice, often blurring the lines between printmaking, drawing, painting, and installation. Endangered flora and fauna populate her richly layered works, highlighting the fragility of the environment and our role in it. This residency is generously funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Arthur is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to teaching in Madison, she spent 14 years as an Associate Professor with the Department of Art and Design at the University of North Florida. Arthur received an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and has served as a Fellow at the Barnes Foundation for Advanced Theoretical and Critical Research. Additional education includes the Rhode Island School of Design and the Tamarind Institute of Lithography at the University of New Mexico. She was raised in the Cherokee Foothills of North Carolina.

HAPPENINGS

Brenda Mallory (2016 Artist-in-Residence) and Lehuauakea (upcoming 2021 Artist-in-Residence) rented the studio for a couple of days this week to work on making monotypes. The NACF mentorship program pairs established professional artists with emerging artists to help propel their careers.
Wendy Red Star's three lithos are nearing the finish line! After months of careful work, master printer Judith Baumann and apprentice printer Maggie Middleton have Wendy's new images all editioned; they will be getting signed and finalized soon. Keep an eye on our Instagram and website for this much-anticipated release.

Wendy Red Star, Her Dreams Are True (Julia Bad Boy), lithograph edition spread out in the studio for final curation this past Wednesday.
