NSF Connections in Smart Health Workshop - Call for Applications 

The Smart and Connected Health (SCH) Program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Link Lab at the University of Virginia (UVA) are hosting a Connections in Smart Health Workshop in Arlington, VA, September 24-26, 2018 to discuss and promote advances in smart health research and to foster partnerships for the future of smart health. The workshop’s focus will be on connections within and between communities, with attendees including, but not limited to, current Principal Investigators (PIs) of SCH-funded projects, health care provider networks, and industry leaders. Healthcare Information Technology Workforce: Updated Analysis Shows Continued Growth and Opportunity

A new analysis of the healthcare information technology (IT) workforce indicates that as hospitals and health systems continue to adopt electronic health records (EHRs) and other forms of IT, as many as 19,852 to 153,114 more full-time equivalent (FTE) personnel may be required [1]. The new study has been published by William Hersch and colleagues Keith Boone and Annette Totten in the new journal, JAMIA Open. Read more


American Medical Association (AMA) has issued a press release on a new study by Dr. Khairat

The study, entitled “A usability and safety analysis of electronic health records: a multi-center study,” was published July 2 by the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. It was conducted by researchers with MedStar Health’s National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare, the American Medical Association (AMA), and others, and was funded by the AMA. Researchers focused on the two largest EHR vendors, Epic and Cerner, who comprise more than 50 percent of the market. They conducted the study at two sites per vendor, or four health systems. The paper was also featured in Politico.

Public-Private Partnerships Will Accelerate Data-Driven Discovery

Big news from NIH announcing their new initiative to develop and test new ways to best implement cloud services in support of biomedical research. Called STRIDES for “Science and Technology Research Infrastructure for Discovery, Experimentation and Sustainability,” the initiative will allow NIH to explore the use of cloud environments to streamline NIH data use. By partnering with commercial cloud service providers, NIH expects to improve access to biomedical data and provide cost-effective cloud infrastructure, data storage, computation, and machine learning services for NIH and NIH-supported investigators. Funding Opportunity
Carolinas Collaborative Pilot RFA Now Open In order to promote inter-institutional collaborations and increase utilization of the resources, the 4 CTSAs are soliciting proposals involving at least 2 of the Carolina CTSAs that utilize the data available from the Carolinas Collaborative to generate new knowledge and improve the quality of care delivered to patients in the Carolinas. The work should collect preliminary data to lead to a competitive proposal to an external funding agency (NIH, AHRQ, PCORI, etc.) within 1 year from funding.
