JUNE 2018 NEWSLETTER
The European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology                                                                                                                                          ISSUE #16

Dear Colleagues,

Happy June everyone!  Time is flying - do not forget to register for the Congress in Brussels! The Congress is just around the corner as it is at the beginning of September this year – so please plan accordingly and before your summer holidays officially begin.
Our Society is starting to yield the fruits of the hard work of its members. For example, Maria Vittinghoff and her group (created by PA Lonnqvist), published the Pain Ladder concept (postoperative pain management in children: Guidance from the pain committee of the European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology (ESPA Pain Management Ladder Initiative) Pediatr Anesth 2018): it is a guidance grouped by a type of surgical procedure and it suggests basic, intermediate, and advanced pain management methods.
We also published a common statement encouraging all colleagues to allow healthy children to drink clear fluids up to one hour before the start of anaesthesia which was co-signed by APAGBI, ESPA and ADARPEF (Consensus statement on clear fluids fasting for elective pediatric general anesthesia. Pediatr Anesth 2018 ; 28 : 411-4).
Lastly, Marzena ‘s group finished writing an ESPA statement on safe and efficient sedation for children.
Please read further in the newsletter with more detailed information about the upcoming Congress 2018, our decision regarding the Congress 2019, the Elections results, the new membership update, future events, and the option to join ESPA via your local National Society at a cheaper rate.
Thank you for being a part of the ESPA community and helping us grow.  We always welcome new ideas so please write, tweet, or facebook message us at any time
– we would love to hear from you!

Francis Veyckemans
ESPA President 2018
You all probably remember that is was our initial plan to organize the 2019 congress in Trondheim, Norway. However, after a site-visit and further intense and very constructive discussions with the local organizing committee around Eric Isern, the ESPA board had to take the decision not to go to Norway in 2019, but to find another alternative relatively quickly for our Congress 2019.
This decision is primarily motivated by the potential financial loss we may face following the Congress. ESPA is indeed a non-profit organization financial reserve so that we could not accept a financial risk of half of our financial reserve – which was the prediction after the second preliminary budget. This financial issue had two major reasons: one is the lack of transport capacity and flexibility of flight schedules to and from Trondheim, second is the Norwegian legislation regarding alcohol and beverage prices.
ESPA must calculate with at least 350 delegates attending our Congress to be able to finance thecongress.  The whole ESPA board deeply regrets that we cannot afford to come to Trondheim. The ESPA congress 2019 will take place in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Laszlo Vutskits was elected as next President following Francis Veyckemanns. The new Treasurer is Claudia Höhne from Germany. Jurgen de Graaff will stay as Secretary.

Nada Sabourdin,
Nicola Disma, and Laszlo Vutskits will stay as ExBo Members whereas Suellen Walker (England), Peter Frykholm (Sweden) and Dusica Simic (Serbia) will step in as new ExBo Members.

As Nada Sabourdin (France) and Tamas Kovesi (Hungary) tied,  Tamas Kovesi can step in the ExBo to reach the maximum number of 10 allowed ExBo members according to our statutes.

There is a lot of other Congress and Brussels information on our website HERE.

By the way, have you ever been to Brussels?
Famous for chocolate, waffles,
moules frites (Mussels), and so much more.  As always, the social programme will not disappoint and will more than likely end in dancing - the ESPA way.

We hope to see you there - combined with the International Assembly of Pediatric Anesthesia,  we are sure to provide a Congress you won't want to miss!

Last May, a new membership system (CLAUDIN) was set up on our website by GUARANT, the Congress organizing company with which ESPA is associated. Its launching was associated with some logistical problems and we know that some members will still encounter some frustration to pay their annual membership fees online. We sincerely apologise for this.
We must stay positive while moving ahead and we will all work hard on this issue to have our membership management system running smoothly until the end of 2018. If you encounter any difficulties with your registration process or your personal data in the system, please contact the ESPA Association Manager immediately via mail (

Also, we would like to point your attention to a new ESPA membership possibility called the ESPA JOINT MEMBERSHIP.

Your national association or society can offer a reduced-fee ESPA membership to all its members: this is called a joint membership and gives you the same advantages (access to the website, reduced registration fee to the Congress etc.) as a full membership. Please contact your national representative for further details. Please note that your society can sign up either in January or July each year.
