DECEMBER 2017 NEWSLETTER
The European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology                                                                                                                                                             ISSUE #14

Dear Colleagues,

The year 2017 was a great year for ESPA. The annual Congress organized in Glasgow in collaboration with the APAGBI was a great success as more than 500 colleagues attended this interesting and varying Congress in the exciting city of Glasgow. All the lectures were videotaped and are now available on the ESPA website for members only.

Moreover, the meeting SARNEPI-ESPA was organised by Nicola Disma in Perugia (Italy) in June. In addition, an excellent collaboration with ESPNIC has been established thanks to Ehrenfried Schindler, Jurgen de Graaff and Laszlo Vutskits: a common Congress is foreseen in the future and, in the meantime, an ESPNIC session will be set up within our forthcoming Congresses.

A few National Societies already took the initiative to offer a dual membership (National Society + ESPA) to their members: the first to agree was Finland, and we hope that Sweden and others will also follow. This new goal is important because the more members we have, the more powerful the Society will be in terms of education, expert opinions for companies, and EU decision making.

Following the publication of the results of APRICOT, the Subcommittee 5 (Paediatric Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Chair- Karin Becke) of ESA contacted the board of ESPA to organize a European Refresher Course on Paediatric Anaesthesia on Friday June 1st together, just before the ESA Congress in Copenhagen. An e-learning platform is also being prepared by the Scandinavians under the heading of Torsten Lauristen.

The 2018 Congress will be organized in Brussels in collaboration with the Belgian Association for Paediatric Anaesthesia from September 6 to 8th. This Congress will also be the second International Assembly for Pediatric Anesthesia (IAPA) and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA). The aim of the Assembly is to gather experts from all over the world to discuss all aspects of paediatric anaesthesia such as clinical practice, teaching, research and quality improvement.

There is also an opportunity to invite scholars of low-income countries to attend the Congress and spend a few weeks in an anaesthesia department in Europe. If you have any opportunity to welcome or support one of these colleagues financially, please contact us.

I would like to take the opportunity of this message to thank Ehrenfried Schindler for his outstanding Presidency of our Society and all the members of the Executive Board of ESPA for their hard work and enthusiasm. I would also thank the Guarant team for its excellent work and professionalism.

In the name of ESPA, I wish you all the best for 2018 in your personal, family, and professional lives.

Francis Veyckemans

The ESPA society aims to provide a variety of services for anaesthesiologists involved in paediatric anaesthesia which include: coordination and organisation of an annual international congress on paediatric anaesthesia via local organisation planning; establishing guidelines on the training, organisation and practice of paediatric anaesthesia; and acting as a centre of expertise for paediatric anaesthesiology.

Do you remember the Glasgow Photo Contest? It was a hard decision as we received so many beautiful and captivating photos, but we officially have the winners who will receive
a FREE Gala dinner ticket in Brussels next year.
Congratulations and thank you to all who entered!
