Take a look at our 2020 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

We are extremely proud to share with you our 2020 Annual Report. I’d like to draw from my CEO’s message in that report to highlight what our team was able to achieve in 2020 and how that continues to fuel our momentum in 2021.

Today, we are Australia’s largest Autistic-led organisation, providing paid employment opportunities to 62 Autistics, about half of whom are former mentees. Our team has empowered thousands of Autistic young people across Australia to see themselves through a strengths-based lens and take pride in who they are.

COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdowns created a new set of challenges in 2020 and those have carried over into 2021.

As soon as COVID started to get traction in Australia last year, our team instinctively knew that our top priority had to be providing more opportunities for Autistic young people to connect. Links to Autistic mentors and peers can be critical in providing an anchor of  security, acceptance and positive identity, especially during times of dramatic upheaval.

Together, as a team, we dramatically expanded our online group mentoring program by 300% and offered our 82 partner schools the opportunity to convert face-to-face programs to an online setting.

We developed an array of Autistic-led webinars and tip sheets designed to reassure young people and give their parents, carers and teachers the immense benefit that comes from leveraging Autistic insights.

Amid all of this, we managed to execute our biggest event in I CAN history, our 2020 AWETISM Virtual Expo. This showcase event -- held entirely online and free to the public -- was a global celebration of the passions, talents and insights of Autistic young people.

The unity of our team in working toward shared goals has allowed us to carry the momentum from 2020 into 2021:

  • We are currently offering over 200 spaces in our online mentoring program every eight weeks. - GO TO ONLINE

  • In Victoria we are now partnering with 60 Victorian government schools and 21 independent schools. - GO TO I CAN SCHOOLS

  • In Queensland we are on track to delivering 20 group mentoring programs across State schools.

  • We are establishing a presence in Barwon/Geelong and Bendigo (August 2021).

  • We continue to be a valued collaborator, delivering projects in 2021 for the Department of Education & Training - Victoria (DET), Positive Partnerships and the Youth Affairs Council Victoria.

As we continue to face unchartered waters, we are so very grateful to the many individuals and organisations who believe in our mission and help enable our game-changing work.
To the young people, families and schools we support, thank you for putting your trust in us. It is a privilege to work with all of you to create a world that embraces Autism.
