NEW ONLINE MENTORING GROUPS, WORK OPPORTUNITIES & VOTE FOR CHRIS!
Take a look back at AWETISM 2020 and get ready for 2021.

Dear Friends,

Against a backdrop of COVID-19 that remains so unsettling and challenging for so many in our community, our I CAN team continues with our focus on providing support and security for the young people we serve. Our thoughts are also with the many families, school communities and adults who are trying to navigate these very uncertain times.

In this newsletter, we’d like to share:

CYCLE FIVE ONLINE MENTORING
Take a look at our new interest groups!

Our Autistic-led online group mentoring program, which we pioneered in 2017, continues to offer a steady, safe, fun space where Autistic young people ages 8-22 can connect each week with peers and mentors. For so many of our mentees, that regular weekly spot provides an anchor of security. As we continue to grow our team, we are excited to be able to provide even more groups and new themes.

Cycle five begins the week of Monday 13th of September, and includes new interest based groups for:

Anime
Dinosaurs
Drawing & Art
Dungeons & Dragons
Harry Potter
Marvel
Minecraft
Mythical Creatures (NEW!)
Pokémon
Screens, Tunes & Characters
Space (NEW!)
Star Wars
Young Adult Books (NEW!)

These will be offered along with our standing groups for age-based cohorts (9-13; 13-15; 16-20) and our groups for, Autistic/LGBTIQA+ teens. We also offer our I CAN Imagination Club® for 9-12 year olds, which is a non Autism-specific group.

VOTE FOR CHRIS!
He's a finalist for the Westfield Local Hero awards.

We are very proud that our Founder/CEO Chris Varney has become a finalist of the Westfield Local Hero Awards.

This year alone, we have assisted more than 2000 Autistic young people to develop a stronger sense of self-acceptance, confidence, optimism and belonging through our programs. Our proudly neurodiverse team includes 62 Autistic members, all in paid positions.

If Chris is one of the three winners, I CAN Network will receive a $10,000 grant to create a series of tip sheets featuring practical advice, insights and encouragement from Autistic adults to empower Autistic young people.

As a not-for-profit organisation, community-based grant programs like 'Westfield Local Heroes' help make our work possible. We would be so grateful if you could take a moment to vote for Chris. Voting is open worldwide, closes August 30th and takes about 30 seconds!

Our AWETISM 2020 Virtual Expo (November 2020) showcased the awe-inspiring talents of Autistic students (aged 9-20-years-old). It also provided an opportunity for students to be exposed to inclusive workplaces who are building careers for Autistic young people.

As we prepare to unveil the details of our AWETISM 2021 Virtual Expo, we invite you to watch some of 2020's
amazing student presentations -- from 'The Wonders of Poultry' to 'The Work of An Young Autistic Aboriginal Artist' to 'Public Transport Adventures' and many more, as well as our fabulous keynote addresses and I CAN regional showcases.
