August 2018

Hello NIHD members,

I hope you are enjoying the last few weeks of summer.  We have had a beautiful summer in Michigan and I hope you are enjoying the same.
As many of you may be aware, as a result of our Board planning retreat in 2017, we abolished our committee structure and replaced it by task forces.  We were fortunate to have a Board member that had completed research on professional organizations and shared with us that members of professional organizations prefer to work on a specific tasks as opposed to participating in on-going committees.  So, with a little bit of hesitation, we transitioned to task forces.  Now, after a year and of half, I feel like we have successfully transitioned.  We have started this monthly newsletter which includes a call for volunteers as needed.  As you may have noticed, the tasks are well-defined and time limited.  We are consistently having members volunteer as needed.  So, thank you for your help.
One of our goals from this year’s retreat was to increase member engagement.  To that end, we have developed our social media plan and increased our volunteer involvement, as noted above.  We are also developing and monitoring metrics to track member engagement. We welcome your ideas on increasing member engagement.
Things are going to get very busy this fall as we prepare for HCD18 in Phoenix.  Once again, we will have our annual NIHD activities coincide with this conference.  Please watch for details in next month’s newsletter.  There will be several calls for volunteers prior to the conference so please consider volunteering as it is a great way to meet members. I look forward to meeting many of you at the conference and I hope you will share your ideas for increasing member engagement with me.

Kristina Krail MPH, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, is the recipient of the 2018 HCD Member Scholarship!
She has been serving the healthcare industry through a variety of high-level administrative positions including as Chief Nursing Officer, hospital association executive, and resource management consultant. Eight years ago, an opportunity at NBBJ to leverage all her skills and experience, along with her intrigue of the built environment, lead to a position as Transition Service Lead.  She enjoys her advisory role - helping healthcare entities during their challenging but also exciting time of occupying and opening a new facility.  Kris has always been active in various healthcare and project management associations as a way to keep current and hone her craft; however she has only recently got involved in NIHD.  She says, “I can’t believe I have found a community of like-minded specialists in a field that intersects numerous and somewhat disparate industries.  My relationship with the members and involvement with NIHD initiatives brings me so much professional joy and satisfaction. What a great organization! “

"I am very pleased with the NIHD benefits and appreciate the online access to information and webinars.  More importantly, joining an NIHD task force, workgroup or role on the NIHD Board is a benefit not to be overlooked. NIHD is rich with professionals who have lifelong careers and significant accomplishments in two and sometimes three fields of specialty. NIHD is successful at virtual meeting structures and eliminating the wastes often experienced in committee work making it easier to contribute."
