Farm Fest loads of fun
A gathering at the site of the future farm.Over 300 guests enjoyed a warm fall day filled with music, farm tours, delicious food, shaved ice and great company at our first ever Farm Fest held on October 6th. Our team was delighted to share our emerging farm with everyone who attended, offering greenhouse tours, a talk by City Council candidate Donna Myers about habitat restoration along our length of Pogonip creek, and a chance to see plans for the pocket neighborhood being developed by Coastal Haven Families for young adults with developmental disabilities.

The Wildcat Mountain Ramblers kept us tapping our toes with terrific live music, taking breaks for Leverage 80’s live debut of his original “Costanoa Commons rap!” Leverage 80’s (Lev Zeiger) is an 11-year-old rapper and volunteer farmer. His rap captures our farm’s vision and culture perfectly.

Many volunteers and staff came together under the expert direction of Lisa Rose to bring our community together for this celebration. We thank all our sponsors, including Lighthouse Bank, Workbench, and Las Animas Concrete, as well as Santa Cruz Shakespeare, Mountain Feed and Farm Supply, Shanty Shack Brewing, and Santa Cruz Shave Ice.

Guests could enjoy Taquitos Gabriel’s on-site Mexican meals as well as paella prepared by Empire Grade Purveyors. Thank you to S. Martinelli & Co. for their generous donation of cider and to Nut Kreations for its snack donations. Last but not least, there was plenty of homemade zucchini bread, featuring our own organic zucchini, made by our wonderful volunteers at St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church.

We are so grateful to all who joined us to learn about our vision for creating a community farm that welcomes farmers of all abilities! We look forward to many more celebrations with you, our community.
Helping and rapping at the Farm
A gathering at the site of the future farm.Lev Zeiger, his sister, Ana, and his mom, Leslie, have all been regular farm volunteers during the summer. Lev has helped sow seeds, harvest sweet peas and tomatoes, and compost beds to prepare for planting.

During his time at Costanoa Commons, he was inspired to apply his craft of song-writing to his experience on the farm. Lev, age 11, wrote and performed his rap at the Farm Fest, and his sister, Ana, and friend, Martha, added their voices to make for a memorable live performance that captures our mission beautifully.

Lev, you blew us away! We will get your song up on our website soon so everyone can hear it! Thank you and your entire family for sharing your time and talents with us here at the farm. Nom nom nom!

It’s so nice to know ya,
Have a good day!
Talk to Noah
Oh Yeah

Whoa smell those Sweet Peas
Everybody comes here to grow
At Costanoa Commons
Nom nom nom

We go out outside and we weed some weeds
We go outside and we weave some seeds
There are many different leaves please believe
It’s completely organic for the planet
No pesticides, come along for the ride
Warm hearts inside are happy to be your guide
In that we take pride, helping all kinds of people
Cuz when it comes to growing, everyone is equal!

We helping all, showing it don’t matter who you are
Where you from or where you think you belong
Cuz Costanoa is a home where the world grows
A human society that is so great, plain go!
Plan and go, plants will grow just so so you know
The plants we sew go to perfection
We chose one direction, helping all
We all get together at this fine call!
