Children work hard and have fun
Children working together to spread compost on planting rows. This month, students in the Mandarin Immersion and Gifted and Talented Education programs at San Mateo’s College Park Elementary School visited the farm. They chose Costanoa Commons for a “Panda Party,” a parent-led event meant to create a sense of community through activities, family fun, and community outreach.

The families prepared raised beds for this year’s sunflowers, and the kids carried and dug in compost on two 100-foot rows, making them ready for our dry farmed tomatoes. When asked how many buckets of compost they’d carried, answers ranged from “100 to 10,000.”

The morning was topped off with lunch and farm-picked strawberries. After lunch, the kids didn’t want to leave and asked if they could go back out and dig more!
What’s growing? What’s coming?
Worker pose with flowers and strawberries.Strawberries, dahlias, broccoli, potatoes, sweet peas, lavender, swiss chard, tomatoes, and sunflowers. This diverse mix of fruit, vegetables, and flowers are all rooted and growing on our farm now.

No monoculture here! Small farms like ours can learn from nature about the importance of biodiversity in keeping our soil healthy and our crops productive. Summer squash, beans, cucumber, pumpkins, and heirloom watermelon are coming, too! We’ll even have a few surprises if all goes according to our crop plan.

We look forward to learning what foods and flowers grow best in our conditions and sharing our harvest with you, our neighbors, friends, and supporters.
