Tower Hamlets Community Transport (THCT)
April 2016
It’s Spring! – let’s start helping people to get out and about..
Our new training programme is out – check out the new fire safety course.... there’s some great stories from our members in our social value report
It’s Spring - the time of year when Community Transport ups its game – offering opportunities for people to get out of the house and 'build community on the bus'.

Our Connecting Poplar People project, an excursion club run by Poplar residents, is picking up pace, pictured are some happy customers on a recent trip to Epping Forest.

There’s lots of ideas for future trips. Anyone can come along to our planning meetings on the first Wednesday of the Month. 3 – 4pm. at The Brownfield Cabin, 82 St Leonards Road, E14 0QU

We’re also looking to link with local like minded agencies and projects who can refer people who otherwise wouldn’t get out and about – if your users could benefit from this then please do get in touch

See here for more details:
Need Volunteer drivers?
Our leisure and social members will be busy planning their own trips. A few members have reported they are finding it difficult to recruit new volunteer drivers. If you need a driver do contact THCT as there are a few new keen volunteers that would love some more driving jobs.
New Training Programme
Our training schedule is out for the rest of the year – see the forthcoming dates below
In addition we often arrange extra courses to respond to demand and as bespoke training for employers – let us know if you are a group who wish to train together.
Can’t make the above dates? – let us know we may be able to slot you into a bespoke training.
MIDAS: 28th April; 20th May; (June date TBC)
Emergency First Aid at Work: 28th July
Five steps to safety: 19th August
Passenger Assistant: 21st & 22nd September

New course: Five steps to safety
The Five Steps to Safety course provides the skills and information needed when evacuating a vehicle fire – it’s essential training for regular drivers and passenger assistants. It involves a classroom session and then a practical element simulating evacuations – with smoke but, in this case, without fire.
We’re offering members a special offer on the 4th May – come a try it out at an introductory rate of £49.00 p.p.

Thanks to all the members who agreed to spend time with Alice Sachrajda in March. Alice was interviewing service providers, volunteers and service users to gather information for our social value report. The report is ready in draft and shows how Community Transport makes a positive impact by:
Enabling independent living
Facilitating social interaction
Offering an affordable service
Supporting volunteering
Contributing to wellbeing
Contributing to health
There are Case studies from: Sonali Gardens, Shadwell Basin outdoor pursuits,
The Zacchaeus Project, East London Baptist Tabernacle Church Youth Club,
Ocean Youth Connexions, and Victoria Park Harriers
We’ll be developing this work further over coming months and integrating the stories into our web site etc. . In the meantime if you’d like to see a copy of the draft report then please contact Dave.
Introducing Romna..
Last but not least... We're delighted  to welcome Romna Ali to our team at THCT as Customer Service and Projects Officer. As well as helping with day to day inquiries  Romna will be working across  a number of areas including our developing training programme, the Connecting Poplar People project and emerging digital projects.
