A Note from the Director

Action expresses priorities. -- Mahatma Gandhi

Welcome back to campus!

It is the first day of classes and as usual the Lehigh family has already been hard at work in the South Bethlehem community. Our Volunteer Experience preLUsion students arrived early onto campus and served with our South Side partners, America Reads/Counts tutors are being hired and quickly placed to work with our community schools, and our SERVE program is up and running looking for site leaders.

Phew.

Take a second to read our newsletter and learn about what else is happening on campus. Make sure to stop by and visit us at the Club Expo today in the UC Front Lawn.

As you settle back into campus life, make sure to take some time and get involved with the CSO.

Carolina

Join the CSO Family!

Are you passionate about community service? Do you love interacting with kids? Then the CSO is the place for YOU!

Become a tutor with the CSO's America Reads/America Counts Tutoring Program.  Join us as we work with South Bethlehem's Broughal, Donegan, and Fountain Hill students--grades K-8--within schools and at after school Homework Club locations. Find the tutor application here! Email questions to GA Janysa at inarc@lehigh.edu.

Join the CSO Family by becoming a
Student Coordinator! Coordinators design and lead various community service programs that engage students and community partners throughout the academic year! Learn more on our website or contact Kate Colyer kac515@lehigh.edu with questions.

We're also hiring
Van Drivers to help us transport tutors to schools that are not within walking distance to campus.  If you have a valid drivers license and qualify for work study, this is a great opportunity to help us make our tutoring program possible!  Contact Kate Colyer kac515@lehigh.edu for an application!
The SERVE Program is looking for fabulous Site Leaders to lead a team of 10 students in meaningful service in communities across the country during winter & spring break!

Site Leaders host pre-trip meetings that educate their team on the community issue to be addressed during their trip, engage their team in group bonding and service projects in the Lehigh Valley before their trip, and continue connections with their group after the trip through service reunions and other fun activities!

 Email inbreak@lehigh.edu for more information!
Application Opens September 5

Great South Side Sale

We had another successful Move Out Collection Drive and Great South Side Sale!

As you may remember, at the end of the academic year in May, we collected unwanted items from residence halls and off campus housing. All items were sorted, priced, and sold at the Great South Side Sale in June with proceeds benefiting children's programming in South Bethlehem.

Fun facts from this year:

- Three 24-foot and one 16-foot trucks were loaded with discarded items.

- Average cost of items for the Sale: 50 cents

- Number of people in line to enter Sale at 10 am: 1,400

- Money raised: $19,851.18

Light the Night Walk
The Light The Night Walk is a fundraising campaign benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and their funding of research to find blood cancer cures. Coming together for a common goal, friends, families and co-workers form fundraising walk teams. Culminating in inspirational and memorable evening walks every fall, participants in communities across North America join together carrying illuminated lanterns to take steps to end cancer.
