UFRJ SCIENCE PARK PROMOTES THIRD EDITION OF CULTURAL AND GASTRONOMIC FAIR

The UFRJ Science Park promoted, from December 6 through 8, from 11 am until 8 pm, the third edition of the Cultural and Gastronomic Fair. The event consisted of a series of attractions, including food trucks, projects developed by the gastronomy course on “Brazilian cuisine”, lectures, cultural actions and happy hour with music and handmade beverages.

During the event, there was also a donation campaign of toys, clothes and household appliances for residents of Vila Residential, located next to the Park. After floods caused by the heavy rains over the recent months, the residents had their houses damaged and lost many personal belongings.

The Cultural and Gastronomic Fair was carried out by a partnership with the INJC/UFRJ Gastronomy Course, Cibus Junior Enterprise, the University Town Hall and the HUB UFRJ space. During the event, there was also the 1st UFRJ Gastronomy Students’ Meeting, focusing on the topic: “The Brazilian Cuisine and the 5 years of the UFRJ Gastronomy Course”.

SCIENCE PARK CEO HAS AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN VALOR ECONÔMICO NEWSPAPER

On November 24, the CEO of UFRJ Science Park, José Carlos Pinto, had an article published in Valor Econômico Newspaper. He talks about how important it is for Brazil to invest in health and in the process of transforming academic research into products, goods and services that can bring real benefits to society.

The article “Passing the baton of knowledge” (“Passando o bastão do conhecimento”) calls attention to the low percentage of pharmaceutical ingredients produced by the country, to the extreme dependence created by this fact and the impact on medication prices. José Carlos explains the need to increase innovation capacity, competitivity and knowledge in this sector.

THE PARK WELCOMES HENRY ETZKOWITZ FROM TRIPLE HELIX INSTITUTE

UFRJ Science Park welcomed two visitors on November 24: Professor Henry Etzkowitz, from the International Triple Helix Institute, and Professor Mariza Almeida, from UNIRIO. The Park’s CEO, José Carlos Pinto, met the two visitors. Professor Etzkowitz is one of the founders of the triple helix concept, which views universities, governments and businesses as innovation drivers.

Etzkowitz currently develops research projects that aim at assessing entrepreneurship-based activities at universities. During the meeting, it was defined which innovation indicators can be used in Brazil as well as other aspects of the research methodology. Due to the characteristics of Brazlian universities it was decided that technological and social entrepreneurship should be taken into account.

■ Coppe Columbia - On November 30, UFRJ Science Park, Coppe and the Columbia University gave a presentation on the Coppe Columbia Center, an innovation hub created a year ago through a partnership between the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Columbia University.
■ Inova Parque UFRJ - Minerva Bots, a robotics team sponsored by the Park in competitions, was interviewed by INOVA Parque UFRJ, the Park’s YouTube channel. Click here to watch the video.
■ Innovation - On November 11, the Park hosted another edition of “Meetings in the Park”. This edition’s theme was “Innovation and entrepreneurship in health”. Participants included Arthur Bretonnet, Head of Digital Innovation in Healthcare of SFY, a Spanish software company, Daniel Furtado, head of Innovation of the Instituto D’Or (a Brazilian nonprofit organization whose aim is to promote scientific and technological progress in healthcare), and Thaís Gameiro, partner and director of Research at Forebrain.
■ Visit - On November 10, the Park welcomed representatives of the Center for Nondestructive Analysis (CAND). They were introduced to the Park’s infrastructure as well as to some projects that are relevant to the country. CAND is a private nonprofit organization located at PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro).
