The Newsletter of the Science Park at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is a monthly publication which circulates information about the major activities undertaken at the institution as well as events of interest.
POST-INCUBATION
TWO NEW COMPANIES COME TO UFRJ SCIENCE PARK
As of January, Aquafluxus and SeaHorse will be included in the portfolio of the companies located in the UFRJ Science Park. Both companies will start the post-incubation program, launched in the end of September 2015, which aims at housing and supporting small enterprises promoting R&D and coming from business incubators from all over the country. Seahorse develops technologies capable of transforming the energy from sea waves, tides and river currents into electricity. In addition, these technologies are able to desalinate water. The company was founded in 2006 and after four years it became a resident company at the Coppe/UFRJ Business Incubator. Aquafluxus develops studies and projects of flood control and of precise, low risk and sustainable drainage systems. The company had been at the Coppe/UFRJ Business Incubator since 2010.  With this company, the Park now houses 13 large companies, 6 small and medium-size companies, 6 UFRJ laboratories, as well as 27 startups from the Coppe Business Incubator. The Park has currently an open tender to receive micro, small and medium-size companies, as well as a post-incubation program. All the details can be found here.
DEVELOPMENT
SENATE PASSES A BILL TO ENCOURAGE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN BRAZIL
On December 9, 2015, the Brazilian Senate passed a House of Representatives Bill 77/2015 (PLC - Projeto de Lei da Câmara), which promotes a series of actions to encourage research, innovation and scientific and technological development. Now, the Bill has to have the presidential approval. The PLC 77 will contain amendments which aim at simplifying and making it more dynamic the scientific development, the research, the scientific and technological qualification and the innovation in the country. For example, the Bill alters provisions of the Innovation Law (10.973/2004) to establish guiding principles of the measures that encourage Scientific,  Technological  and  Innovation Activities  (CT&I), such  as  promoting cooperation  and interaction  between  the  private  and  public  sectors;  encouraging  innovation  activities  at  the scientific, technological and innovation institutions (ICTs); promoting entrepreneurial competitiveness; using the purchasing power of the State to stimulate innovation, among others.

BRAZILIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES CELEBRATES ITS CENTENARY WITH A TRAVELLING EXHIBITION
The Brazilian Academy of Sciences is turning 100 years on May 3, 2016. The Academy was founded so as to foster the development of basic science in the country. It plays an active role in the academic milieu by acknowledging talents and incorporating these in its staff, by producing studies of interest for the Brazilian society and by offering advice to the press and government on topics related to science, technology, innovation and education, when requested. To celebrate its Centenary there will be a travelling exhibition called “Time Tunnel” as well as printed and audiovisual material. To support this, check http://goo.gl/gNtgCM.

COPPE/UFRJ BUSINESS INCUBATOR`S MANAGER IS ONE OF THE JUDGES OF AN INTERNATIONAL PRIZE FOR INNOVATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The manager of Coppe/UFRJ Business Incubator, Lucimar Dantas, was one of the 10 invited executives of the movement for world entrepreneurship to judge the Prize called Shell LiveWIRE Top 10 Innovators, a contest that aims to stimulate innovation in a global manner. Innovative projects that create wealth and employment will be judged and the ones that are chosen will be supported by means of the program.

■ VISITS - In 2015, UFRJ Science Park and Coppe Business Incubator opened their doors to institutional visitors. During the year we welcomed 849 people from around the world. From this total, 558 were Brazilians, 124 Americans and the remaining 167 were representatives of companies, institutions, students and researchers from several countries.
