The Newsletter of the Science Park at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is a monthly publication which circulates information about the major activities undertaken at the institution as well as events of interest.

UFRJ SCIENCE PARK OPENS SPACE FOR COWORKING
Until the end of the first trimester of this year, the UFRJ Science Park will call for tender companies, entrepreneurs and other parties interested in sharing working places and, mainly, in being part of both an innovation and entrepreneurship environment. There will be a working area of around 200m², divided in 42 workplaces, as well as a meeting room and socializing spaces. The goal of the new program is to increase interaction between companies, entrepreneurs, the university and entrepreneurship and innovation entities. Follow the call for tenders at the website www.parque.ufrj.br.

PARK PROMOTES ACTIVITIES TO FOSTER THE INCREASE OF COMPETITIVENESS IN OIL EXPLORATION IN BRAZIL
A number of debates, seminars and activities have been developed by the UFRJ Science Park together with companies, laboratory and academia to promote initiatives aiming at leveraging competitiveness within the exploration industry. Among them, there is the establishment of a working group to create a document to be presented to funding and regulation agents in order to define strategies. On January 27, there was a meeting which discussed scenarios and opportunities in the Oil and Gas industry. During the event, Elmar Mourão, a professor at Getúlio Vargas Foundation presented the oil geopolitical history. During the meeting there was also a lecture given by Carlos Camerini and Jorge Bruno, oil experts from National Petroleum Industry Organization (Organização Nacional da Indústria do Petróleo - Onip), who  talked about opportunities for small medium and large companies of the sector in the next years.  On the same day, there was the Platec Technological Workshop (Program of Technological Platforms for the Oil and Gas Industry), related to the tender launched by FINEP-Research Council of Norway (RCN), which aims at fostering and supporting projects elaborated in cooperation with both Brazilian and Norwegian companies. COPPE/UFRJ BUSINESS INCUBATOR AND UFRJ SCIENCE PARK WELCOME STUDENTS FROM GLOBAL PARTNERS MBA
On January 21, MBA students from around the world, participating in the Global Partners program, learned about the history and functioning of the innovative and entrepreneurial environment that was created by Coppe/UFRJ Business Incubator, UFRJ Science Park and UFRJ. The students attended a lecture given by three companies settled at Coppe/UFRJ Business Incubator: OilFinder, Twist and EasySubsea. The Global Partners program results from a partnership between Coppead (UFRJ), the Robinson College of Business and the Institut d’Administration des Entreprises de Paris. It offers students the opportunity to learn through practice about the state of the art of international business as well as the opportunity to develop leadership skills.

UFRJ SCIENCE PARK HOSTS A WORKSHOP ON THE FIGHT AGAINST THE ZIKA VIRUS AND ON SOLUTIONS FOR THE PROBLEM
On January 18, the Science Park, together with Rio Negócios, hosted the Nucleus Zika Virus Workshop. With the participation of virologists, epidemiologists, bioprocessing engineers, doctors and biochemists, the meeting aimed at establishing partnerships with public and private entities so as to transform scientific discoveries into products for society’s health. As a result, UFRJ and the Instituto Vital Brazil entered a partnership for the production of serum against the Zika virus. The goal is to treat those individuals that have already been infected. It is hoped that the serum stops the virus immediately after application, which would reduce the number of cases of microcephaly caused by Zika.

■ SUCCESS - Fundo Verde (Green Fund), a lab located at the UFRJ Science Park, was highlighted in the TV Globo show called “Como Será?” (What will it be like?) on January 16. This lab receives funding from the relief resources of the Brazilian State Excise Tax, derived from the University’s electrical usage. The tax money is delivered back to projects on improving mobility, energy use – efficiency and production from alternative sources, reduction of water use and monitoring of indicators in the campus.
■ SEDEIS - On January 27, representatives of the Department of Economic Development, Energy, Industry and Services of the State of Rio de Janeiro (SEDEIS - Secretaria de Desenvolvimento Econômico, Energia, Indústria e Serviços do Estado do Rio de Janeiro) visited the UFRJ Science Park and the Coppe Business Incubator. The CEO of the Park, José Carlos Pinto, presented some of the technologies developed by the startups at the Incubator and innovation projects developed by the large, medium and small-sized companies of the institution. The undersecretary Demosthenes Salomão Sobrinho and the superintendents Roberto Cardoso, Sergio Guaranys and Sergio Teixeira were part of the group.
