The Newsletter of the Science Park at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is a monthly publication which circulates information about the major activities undertaken at the institution as well as events of interest.

UFRJ SCIENCE PARK LAUNCHES STRATEGIC PLAN 2016-2045 WITH A DEBATE ABOUT INNOVATION

On April 12, the UFRJ Science Park launches its strategic plan containing the operation guidelines for the next 30 years. The plan will be presented during an event where there will be a debate on the role of innovation for the development of Brazil. The roundtable will bring together the following participants: the rector of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Roberto Leher; the federal congressman Otávio Leite; the municipal secretary for Development, Employment and Innovation, Clarissa Garotinho; the Fiocruz CEO, Nísia Trindade Lima and the director for Innovation from Finep, Márcio Girão. The event will take place at 10 am, in the UFRJ Science Park Auditorium. To attend this event, please send an email to comunicacao@parque.ufrj.br.

COPPE/UFRJ BUSINESS INCUBATOR OPENS REGISTRATIONS FOR SELECTION OF NEW COMPANIES

The COPPE/UFRJ Business Incubator opened a call for tenders to select new companies focused on technology and innovation. Applications can be submitted until May 26, 2017 and details can be found at the institution website.

The proposals presented should meet the following criteria: the product or service developed by the companies must be innovative, the proposals should include some sort of interaction with UFRJ and be both technically and economically feasible. The applicants should schedule an interview, using the phone number which appears in the tender, to obtain the proposal script to be presented.

FUNDING PROGRAM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TELEFÔNICA HAS 24 REGISTERED PROJECTS

The CrowdRio Program, a partnership between the UFRJ Science Park and Telefônica Open Future had 24 projects registered. At the end of the selection process 10 IoT and digital technology startups will be chosen. Final results will be announced on May 31. The program will last until one year, during which the startups will be offered physical infrastructure and a Wayra/Open Future package of services connected to a methodology of business acceleration. In addition, they will have access to an innovation environment open to technological development, in a partnership with researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

PARK`S BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN COLLECTS OVER 70 UNITS OF BLOOD

On March 20, over 70 units of blood were collected during the second Campaign for Blood Donation organized by the UFRJ Science Park together with Hemorio. Entrepreneurs and workers of the laboratories and resident companies of the Science Park and of the COPPE/UFRJ Business Incubator as well as members of other institutions located in the university campus participated in the event.

■ Visits - Over 50 people visited the UFRJ Science Park in March 2017, namely researchers from Tokyo University (Japan), representatives of Germany’s innovation scene as well as local students and researchers.
■ Representation - The Park’s CEO, José Carlos Pinto, became vice-president of the Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation of the Trade Association of Rio de Janeiro (ACRJ). The Science Park is a permanent member of this association and plays an important role as creator of jobs and businesses in Rio de Janeiro.
■ Local Content - On March 21, the Park’s CEO, José Carlos Pinto, participated in a seminar titled “Local content in the oil industry: problem or solution?” that was promoted by Coppe together with the Institute of Economy (UFRJ).
