The Newsletter of the Science Park at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is a monthly publication which circulates information about the major activities undertaken at the institution as well as events of interest.
ARRIVAL
FIOCRUZ AND UFRJ SIGN CONTRACT TO OPEN RESEARCH CENTER AT UFRJ SCIENCE PARK
On October 6, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) signed a Concession of Use of an Area to install a research and technological development center on drugs at UFRJ Science Park. Farmanguinhos/Fiocruz Reference Center in Drugs Synthesis will foster the development of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (IFAs - Insumos Farmacêuticos Ativos). First, the substances will be developed in laboratories and, later, as pilot projects focusing on the treatment of old diseases which affect the Brazilian population, such as malaria, schistosomiasis, leishmaniosis, among other neglected diseases. Roberto Leher, Rector of UFRJ, Paulo Gadelha, President of Fiocruz, Hayne Felipe da Silva, CEO of Farmanguinhos/Fiocruz and José Carlos Pinto, CEO of the UFRJ Science Park were present at the signing ceremony.
POST-INCUBATION
MOBICARE IS NOW A NEW RESIDENT OF THE SCIENCE PARK
Mobicare, a company that operates in the telecommunication sector, is the most recent resident at the UFRJ Science Park. The company is specialized in solutions for mobile self-service and WiFi Carrier Grade. Graduated from the Genesis Institute at PUC-Rio, the company comes to the Park to participate in the post-incubation program, strengthening its R&D partnership with UFRJ, focusing on the networks area. The Park’s post-incubation program aims at supporting the structuring and growth of these companies, as well as helping business articulation and innovation development. The company now becomes part of the innovative environment of the Park, which currently houses research centers of 14 large companies, 9 small and medium-sized ones, 7 laboratories and 26 startups, residents at COPPE Business Incubator.

TWO NEW STARTUPS ARE NOW PART OF COPPE/UFRJ BUSINESS INCUBATOR
The COPPE/UFRJ Business Incubator announced the arrival of two new companies, that can be incubated for three years, extendable for two more years. The companies will have access to the Incubator’s physical and technological infrastructure, as well as assistance and training to turn their business feasible. With the arrival of the new startups, the Incubator now has 26 residents. Vortex Mundus Consultancy was one of the selected companies. It is currently developing the Brazilian Integrated Operational Model (MOBI) to aid the Oil and Gas industry by facilitating and reducing the costs of environmental licensing as well as of contingencies in case of accidents. Another selected company is called Mancha, a Zebu spinoff, which is focused on developing educational and children’s products that are water-based and use vegetable pigments so as to avoid synthetic chemical products.

SECOND EDITION OF THE PARK`S GASTRONOMY FAIR ATTRACTS HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE
The UFRJ Science Park hosted the second edition of the Gastronomy and Cultural Fair on September 13, 14 and 15. The event gathered food trucks and enterprises connected to the gastronomy course and to the Junior Company of Gastronomy (UFRJ). In addition, workshops were offered, the UFRJ competing teams gave presentations and a happy hour took place with the participation of independent bands formed by students. The fair was supported by the UFRJ Nutrition Institute and Gastronomy Course, by the UFRJ Agency for Innovation, by the UFRJ Project for Challenges, by the University of Quebradas, by the Junior Gastronomy Company and the University Mayor.

■ Internationalization - The UFRJ Science Park welcomed a committee from Portugal’s government represented by the State Secretariat for Industry (Secretaria de Estado da Indústria – SEI). The group came to Brazil to sign an agreement between Brazil and Portugal to settle partnerships for joint ventures and to promote discussions and technical knowledge on the internationalization of start-ups.
■ Nasa - “Nasa’s Culture of Innovation” was the topic of the speech held by John Saiz, former chief technologist of NASA Johnson Space Center, in the series of meetings called Open Talk. The event took place on September 23 and was organized by the UFRJ Science Park in partnership with Sebrae (Brazil's Micro and Small Business Support Service), ANPEI (National Association for Research and Development of Innovative Companies) and Elo Group, a graduate from Coppe/UFRJ Business Incubator.
