We have added names from 21 new references, including the European Medicines Agency’s Community Monographs, improving the coverage of regions and languages and adding 600 new taxa to bring the overall total to 13,560 medicinal plants.
You can use the portal to find the currently accepted scientific name, all synonyms and names published in important references for all of these plants.
The taxonomy has been revised in line with Kew’s taxonomic databases, and we are now moving towards a quarterly update cycle to ensure that our taxonomy remains current.
Our quarterly updates will also enable us to share improvements in the breadth and depth of our coverage of medicinal plant references on a regular basis. If you notice any errors in the data or have a suggestion for a reference that would be useful to include please let us know (firstname.lastname@example.org)
We have also made a few improvements to the portal:
- The relationship between species and their subspecies and varieties are now clearer and easier to navigate.
- The initial results page now includes more detail on the sources of the names to which a search term has matched.
- If these matched names are known to be medicinal they are identified by a red ‘m’.
You can have a look here: http://mpns.kew.org/mpns-portal/
As always, we would welcome any feedback on the portal and the data contained within it. A more detailed breakdown of the update, and a link to our list of references, can be found on our new Resource page.
