Community Yard Sales

How We Roll

We had a great time at our sale during the New Washington Community Yard Sales; the only drawback was not being able to get out and shop ourselves - it's one of our favorite annual community sales.

For yard sale fans, there's nothing like a good community or route (like the World's Longest and Lincoln Highway Buy-Way) sale. There is something for everyone, and the sales are concentrated so you're not wasting valuable shopping time driving around.

We all know the basic yard sale shopping hints:

  • Shop early for the best selection; shop late for the best deals.
  • Bundle items before asking a vendor's best price.
  • Don't be afraid to negotiate

But here are a few other tactics that we keep in mind when we are shopping a community yard sale event:

  • Go native! (Yes, we start planning our lunch break first thing in the morning!) We look for local diners or pulled pork stands set up in parking lots. Church sales have great lunch stands, and always have the best dessert options. We can (and do) get chain fast food anytime; community yard sales are a great opportunity to explore a new area.
  • Buddy system! Yardsaling is definitely more fun with a friend, but you want to be sure that your shopping styles are in sync. If you are a speed-shopper who can scan a sale in minutes, you don't want to be left sitting in the car chomping at the bit to get to the next sale while your friend carefully examines each and every item on the tables. (Make plans ahead of time to meet up with THOSE friends for lunch!)
  • Don't be a weather weenie! Summer sales can be miserably hot, rainy, muddy, or all of the above. But the bad weather can weed out your shopping competition and can also prompt the vendors to make good deals. Some of us complain more than others (Laura) but it's well worth it to stick out the bad weather and keep shopping.
  • Negotiate the price, except when you don't. Yes, most yard sale vendors expect to be asked for a better price, and have some wiggle room in their pricing. And it is absolutely okay to ask for a lower price when you truly believe an item is overpriced, or if you like it but not enough to spend that much. But IF you love it, have never seen one like it, have to have it, and/or think the asking price is fair - just pay it. It's good yard sale karma.
