TRACTION: Helping young people go places!

TRACTION supported 107 participants through our youth mentoring, one-day workshops and school holiday programs this term, bringing the total number of young people TRACTION has helped to 931. We welcome your ongoing support so we can continue to help kids in need.

During Term 3, Lauclan, a TRACTION participant who completed the Bicycle Build program, secured an apprenticeship at Pro Honda Motorcycles at Moorooka.

"TRACTION helped me really think about what I wanted to do in the future. I learnt a lot about life skills, how to be polite, work in a team and share ideas. To me it's really important to have a positive attitude, be nice to people and show them respect like you want to be respected. They're the two main things I got out of TRACTION - working in a team and respect."

As part of the Small Engines program, students from Villanova College learnt quickly about the fundamentals of mechanics and prepared six Honda CT110 'Postie' motorcycles for the Dust Hustle event. Nothing like a deadline - the pressure was on to get these machines ready for the 28th of September. How exciting!

Reaching out. The TRACTION one-day 'Bicycle Build & Maintenance' workshops are an ideal way to reach new communities in need and two were delivered for students from Runcorn State High and Mt Maria College.

With support of the Cory Foundation, five community outreach programs were delivered during the school holidays for young people in partnership with the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC), PCYC's Project Booyah, Running Wild Youth Conservation Culture, BABI Youth & Family Service and the Cage Youth Foundation.

Thanks to Cycling Brisbane and Brisbane City Council, and in partnership with LUX and COLONY BMX and Ride Sports, TRACTION held the ‘School’s Out’ BMX and Mountain Bike JAM at Bracken Ridge BMX Park on 21st September. Designed to foster community, promote the new BMX facility and encourage healthy lifestyles, the event built on the success of the 2018 ‘School’s Out’ event.

Community Fundraising Events

23 business and community leaders teamed up with 30 TRACTION participants to build BMX bikes from scratch at the inaugural CEO Bike Build on 6th September. Over $51,000 was raised through the event which allowed young people to engage with and lead their CEO working partners through the bike build process while sharing their experiences and learning from each other.

Business and community leaders from the Redlands attended our first ever Supporter Dinner on 28th August. Riley, a TRACTION participant from Wynnum State High School, and mentors Oscar and Barry shared their experience at TRACTION.

300 guests attended the 'Long Lunch', organised by Food for Thought Brisbane on 13th September. TRACTION was fortunate to be selected as the beneficiary charity of the event and $47,000 was raised to provide access to TRACTION programs for at risk youth.

TRACTION empowers young people in need by helping them discover their talents, positively engage with their communities and build their own future.

We understand that everybody learns differently and some young people don't realise their potential in a classroom. TRACTION provides a safe environment where young people restore items donated by the community and with the guidance of Mentors, learn new skills and put them into action through participation in real, tangible and meaningful learning activities.
