TRACTION: Empowering young people in need

Have you got your ticket?

Only two weeks until "Canapés in the Shed".

We'd be delighted if you could make it to our annual fundraiser on Thursday 20th October and help celebrate our first birthday.

TRACTION relies on corporate, charitable and community donations and grants to fund its operational expenditure and we appreciate the difference our supporters make.

TRACTION Workshop Updates

Term Four Kicks Off!

TRACTION programs kick off again this week. Term 4 will see:

  • 3 workshops operating up to 4 days per week each
  • 8 schools and community groups participating
  • 48 young people engaged
  • Up to 50 volunteers and team members delivering bicycle and small engine programs and helping at TRACTION events
We're excited to welcome new community group Access Community Services to TRACTION at Moorooka.

Our new West End workshop starts operating in mid-October and it'll be our privilege to serve students from Brisbane State High School at our new Brisbane base. Thank you to local business PENSAR, our West End workshop sponsor who's providing rent-free space and fantastic staff in support. Thank you also to the EPIC GOOD Foundation for contributing funds to purchase tools and equipment.

Term 3 wrap up.

TRACTION Bike Mentors get as big a kick out of giving graduation certificates as our participants who receive them! Well done to the 28 participants from 5 schools who completed fantastic projects in Term 3.

Workshop upgrades.

The September school holidays provided the chance for TRACTION Bike Mentors to take stock and upgrade the Moorooka and Capalaba workshops. Thanks to the TRACTION team of volunteers - including first time volunteers Daniel and Justin (pictured with Dan, Leroy, Richard and Rob) - for taking the time to lend a hand.

TRACTION in the news.

Kulan and Bailey featured in a story in the Redland City Bulletin about the work TRACTION participants have been doing servicing tricycles for students of the Redlands Special School. To read the full story, click here.

We're Recruiting

TRACTION is expanding and looking for mechanically-minded and experienced people to join our Bike Mentor team. We are seeking two 'Workshop Managers' who have hearts for empowering young people in need and experience working with bicycles and/or automotive industries (including small engines or motorcycles). The roles are typically across 4 days per week and are paid opportunities. Please contact Sandy on 0417764449 or

How you can help

TRACTION relies purely on private, corporate, charitable and community contributions to fund the program. Any contribution you can make, large or small, is greatly appreciated. There are a range of ways to help including donating a project, buying a TRACTION T-shirt, making a donation for an amount of your choice, sponsoring a student's participation as well as corporate sponsorship packages which are available.

TRACTION empowers young people in need. TRACTION helps young people positively engage with their communities, discover their talents and create their own future.

We understand that everybody learns differently and some young people don’t realise their potential in a classroom. That’s why we provide an alternative and action-based learning environment, encouraging relationships and access to employment opportunities.

TRACTION provides programs that engage young people and support the development of practical skills, communication and broader life skills.

We help young people realise their own self-worth, find their purpose, re-commit to learning, begin finding their own career, and become active and positive members of their community.

We provide a safe environment where young people, with the guidance and support of mentors, learn new skills and put these skills into action through participation in real, tangible and meaningful learning activities.

The TRACTION “Bicycle Build”, “Small Engines” and “Motorcycle” Programs provide the chance for young people to restore items donated by the community whilst being supported by volunteers who provide support and positive role modelling. Volunteer ‘Bike Mentors’ support 12-17 year old ‘Bikers’ (participants) to repair, restore or customise donated bicycles, small engines and motorbikes in an action-based learning environment of creativity, empowerment and ownership.

TRACTION is a vehicle for people to make a difference and is building a vibrant community of volunteers, program partners and sponsors around our ‘Bikers’ who are experiencing a sense of contribution and belonging.

TRACTION operates two workshops in Brisbane, in Capalaba and Moorooka, and a third will commence operating in West End in mid-October 2016. TRACTION programs will soon be delivered in new communities through exciting partnerships with other community groups.

• Increase self-esteem and social skills
• Increase school attendance and achievement
• Improve future employment opportunities
• Improve life skills
• Offer community and mentor support
