My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians shoots for the stars with the addition of Basketmouth, the biggest name in African and Nigerian comedy.

My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians looks set to realise its Pan-African aspirations with the addition of Basketmouth who joins fellow new recruits Carl Joshua Ncube (Zim), Salvado (Uganda) and Daliso Chaponda (Malawi).  Says My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians exec-producer, Nick Wilson; “We are now at a point where this project can accommodate a personality and talent like Basketmouth.  We have assembled the strongest ever cast of African comedians for a TV series- let alone an adult animated comedy show.”

Basketmouth, who started his entertainment career as a hip hop artist, is considered Africa's biggest comedian. His comedy rockstar status is confirmed by the numerous international musicians whose concerts he has anchored; Joe, Boyz 2 Men, Sean Paul, Wyclef Jean, Kool and the Gang, Akon, Dru Hill, Busta Rhymes, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Snoop Dogg, Ciara and Chris Brown. Basketmouth currently hosts the biggest TV show in Nigeria- The MTV Base Big Friday Show

Basketmouth’s primary gig though is being funny which has seen him fill the Indigo O2 Arena in London in 2010 with his comedy concert Lord of the Ribs- the first African comedian to achieve this feat. He has subsequently followed this up with sold out UK tours in 2014, 2015 and 2016 adding the Hammersmith Apollo to the list of prestigious venues he's filled.  When not filling out UK theatres, Basketmouth has had the time to make appearances at the world’s biggest international comedy festival Just for Laughs 2014 in Canada, over and above numerous appearances on Comedy Central Presents.

It was in 2010 that Basketmouth first became acquainted with the My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians project.  He was invited by Nina Hastie to attend an early development brainstorming meeting at exec-producer, Nick Wilson's apartment in downtown Johannesburg. He elucidates: “Trevor Gumbi, Steven Pillemer, Nina Hastie and Nick Wilson were sat around a dining room table discussing the most bizarre and hilarious animated TV show concept I'd ever heard about. Honestly, I was speechless and didn't know how to add to the conversation but, it was a project that I definitely wanted to get involved in.” It was shortly after this encounter that My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians launched 3 x 2min low grade teasers on Facebook to test audience for the concept- within 3 short months they amassed 300,000 engagements.

Fast forward to December 2015 at the Comedy Central International Comedy Festival where Basketmouth was headlining The Best Of Africa Lineup and My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians was premiering live at the festival as part of a mixed media event featuring the standup comedy of the prominent comedians in the voice cast- Richelieu Beaunoir (SA), Nina Hastie (SA), Mpho Popps (SA), Griffy 2Trillion (US) and host Trevor Gumbi (SA)

Wilson had the opportunity to discuss the progress of the project with Basketmouth backstage at the festival. Wilson elaborates; “When we first met Basketmouth in 2010, we were in very early development. We hadn't yet found our feet as a team, we had no business model, we had no idea who our target market was, we hadn't determined our comedic range and we were still formulating our brand of satire. We've jumped many hoops subsequently- the pilot of My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians not only premiered at the Comedy Central International Comedy Festival, it was also broadcast on Comedy Central Africa on the tail end of (what was then) the current season of South Park.  This represents the first ever half hour of adult animation to be produced for and broadcast to an African audience.  We're now going into development of the first Pan-African series.”

Catch Basketmouth at the following gigs:
  • 1st July - 31st July, Lord of the Ribs tour of North America

  • August - September, Lord of the Ribs tour of Nigeria

My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians Teaser
My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians tells the story of Professor Afronaut, Africa’s top technocrat, as he pilots the maiden voyage of Africa’s first space tourism programme, together with Africa’s top leaders and celebrities. Whilst in flight, a cunning chimpanzee is released from his cage in stowage and in the ensuing bedlam the ape bites the spacecraft’s nuclear stabilizer. There is an almighty atomic explosion and all these leaders and celebrities are cross-mutated with adolescent animals. These animal-human hybrids return to Earth and are subsequently exiled to the land of Azania. It is here that Professor Afronaut founds the Nelson Mandela School for Gifted Mutants, with melodrama and comedy playing out amongst the characters with very different backgrounds and divergent personalities.  Offensive, satirical and animated, the show is best described as South Park spliced with Animal Farm.
