The Uphill Times — December 2016

As well as wishing you Season's Greetings,
the staff and children at Uphill Junior School would like to
THANK ALL OUR SUPPORTERS
for their generous donations and fundraising activities.

Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud!

Latest News!

It'll be no surprise to anyone who has looked at our pictures of Iruhuura to be told that it's a fairly wet place during the rainy season. It's part of the reason for the fertility of the land. Though you can have have too much water – ask anybody living in Scotland about that! – the problem in this area of Uganda is tapping in to what's there. Iruhuura's water supply is half way down a steep hill, awkward to get at, and water is extremely heavy to bring back up to the school.

The solution is gathering the water as it falls from the skies, and storing it once you've got it.

On November 18, two monster 10,000 litre water tanks were unloaded from trucks near the school site. This being rural Uganda, they had to be rolled down the (very muddy) track to be set up next to the newly built classroom block and its water-gathering system. As you can see, man-power was the order of the day. Even the teachers were helping.

So, from a meagre water supply, the school site is now literally awash (sorry!) with water containers – from the small hand-washing and drinking water tanks in the school grounds to these fixed tanks. Besides storing the water, the new system should help keep the school grounds a little bit drier as the rain will not be just pouring on to the earth.

All we need is for the rainy season to keep up for only a few more weeks, and the children will have plenty of clean water to drink.

A huge THANK YOU to
Di Hartrup and her Ladies of Berkshire who raised the money for one of the tanks. You are helping to change lives!

Want to change a life this Christmas?

Why not give a gift that will make a real difference to a child’s life? It could be the perfect gift for friend, relative or colleague; it would certainly be perfect for a child at Uphill.  As with all our fundraising, 100% of your alternative gift donations will go to the School.
Our Pupil Support Fund is there to help some of the most deprived children in the Iruhuura community to go to school. Today, three primary age children and one in kindergarten are being supported on a boarding basis at the School.
More children are waiting for the same chance.
Could you help a child go to school?

When a team of four young North of Scotland tennis players decide to get wet and very, very muddy, you can be sure they’re not going to do it alone. That’s why, one Saturday in late October, their coach, their friends, their families, and a handful of willing others joined them on an assault course not far from Dundee. Boy was it wet and muddy!

All this was to raise money for sports and playground equipment at Uphill Junior School. So, very well done, Katie, Katie, Niamh and Rosie – plus coach Steve – you raised over £1,800!

Even Judy Murray had to be impressed!
