On 29 January The Uphill Trust celebrated its first anniversary as a registered Scottish charity. Thanks to the generosity of all of our supporters we have achieved an enormous amount in the past 12 months and 2016 promises to be even more exciting. So, what's new since our last newsletter?
The new five-stance ventilated pit latrine block has been completed!
The pit (12ft long by 43ft deep) was finished before Christmas and the superstructure constructed during January. The children are absolutely delighted with their new 'fancy' latrines - both boys and girls are looking forward to the greatly improved sanitation facilities. We are also delighted to announce that we have received very generous funding from a Scottish charity dedicated to improving children's health in Africa to cover the cost and ongoing maintenance of the new latrines. This has allowed us to transfer funds previously set aside for this project to the next development phase - building the first set of classrooms. Work will begin after the rainy season ends in Uganda (sometime in the summer - unlike in Scotland!).
At the beginning of December we were delighted to receive a grant from Meetings Industry Meeting Needs (MIMN) for the purchase of hand-held solar lanterns. Each pupil will have a lantern at home to enable them to complete homework and to read in the evenings. A number of different lanterns were purchased before Christmas for trial purposes andnow 201 lanterns have been purchased from the UK charity Solar Aid. When they visit the school again at the beginning of March the Trustees are looking forward to handing these lanterns to the children.
Solar lanterns are much safer than the naked-flame kerosene lamps that many families currently use to light in their homes in the evenings.
We have achieved a great deal since we began, but we now have the huge task of raising more funds to provide proper classrooms for the children of Uphill Junior School
