Iconography Presentation

The Young Adult Group will be hosting a special event on Iconography on Saturday, Oct 13th at 11:45AM.  Please join us as papal-approved Iconographer Fr. Peter Pearson gives a talk on Christian iconography rooted in contemplative prayer, and leads an icon art interactive session. Tucson Tamales will be served for lunch.

An Icon is a religious work of art, most commonly a painting, from the Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodoxy, Roman Catholic, and certain Eastern Catholic churches. The most common subjects include Christ, Mary, saints or angels. Though especially associated with "portrait" style images concentrating on one or two main figures, the term also covers most religious images in a variety of artistic media produced by Eastern Christianity, including narrative scenes. In the icons of Eastern Orthodoxy, almost everything within the image has a symbolic aspect with color playing an important role as well. An Icon strives to offer a “window into heaven” with the purpose of raising the mind and heart in contemplative prayer.

Fr. Peter Pearson is one of a few papal-approved Iconographers allowed to produce Icons for Catholic churches. He is a well known iconographer, teacher of icon painting, speaker and author on the subject. He's been studying and painting icons for nearly fifty years and brings a practical, systematic, and grounded approach to this ancient art form that is both contemporary and traditional. Over the course of his ministry as an icon painter, he's studied with a dozen master iconographers and has shared his experience/knowledge with his students. Peter has studied theology extensively and holds both an M. Div. as well as a Th. D. He is currently commissioned to work in the new Byzantine Catholic Church being constructed on Mount Lemmon here in Tucson.

How to financially support Newman

Did you know that our weekly offertory during Mass is what makes it possible to pay our staff and bills?  We know that carrying cash is not always a regular practice so we've added a new alternative with our Online Giving Program.  It provides an easy way to track your contributions for tax credit purposes and allows our alumni and parents an easy way to help out financially.
