From the Convenor
The first time visitor to Brisbane will notice a different Greek landscape to thet which exists in other capital cities. For Brisbanites, proud of their Greek heritage (about 20,000) their activities revolve firstly around their parish church, secondly around the Greek community and thirdly around the various associations.
There are 3 parish churches: St. George at South Brisbane which is administered by the central Greek Orthodox Community Council whose financial membership is drawn from all over Brisbane, elects 15 Councillors.. Theotokos Church at Mt. Gravatt, which is administered by a parish committee elected by it's financial members. St. Paraskevi at Taigum, North Brisbane, is administered by a parish committee appointed by the Archdiocese. There is absolute cooperation & harmony between all three parishes, which are strongly aligned with & strongly supportive of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, based in Sydney, & it's head, His Eminence, Archbishop Stylianos.
The central Greek Orthodox Community of St. George Council, is regarded as the spokesman and representative of the Greeks of Brisbane, it has a 70 year history, it is elected every 2 years, (the present President is a Kazzy, Michael Anastas) it has a wide array of activities (Govt grants total $ 9M, assets of $24M, (TO BE CONTINUED)
