Half-Century-Long Commission Continues in Knoxville, TN

Willet Hauser is excited to announce the continuation of a long-standing commission with the Church of the Ascension in Knoxville, Tennessee. Fifty-six years after the first windows were installed in the West Knoxville church, two additional windows are currently being fabricated in our studio in Winona, Minnesota. Designed by stained glass artist Mark Bleakley, the windows will depict St. Elizabeth and St. David of Wales. Once installed they will complete the church’s clerestory window series depicting the Saints of the Church.

Willet Hauser’s relationship with the Church of the Ascension began in the 1950s, shortly after the construction of the original sanctuary, when the studio was known as the Willet Studio. The original collection of windows featured the Liturgical Seasons of the Church, such as Christmas, Easter and Pentecost, depicted symbolically. Twenty years later, when the church grew from 250 communicants to over 1000, the studio was called upon to create another series depicting scenes from the Life of Christ in the new sanctuary. This was later followed by the clerestory series, which began in the 1990s.

Not unlike our longest running commission at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, which spanned three generations of the Willet family and took 66 years to complete, this current project brings great joy and honor to our artisans and staff. We are so pleased to continue the work began 56 years ago. We cannot wait to share the conclusion to such an exciting journey in liturgical art that we embarked on with the Church of the Ascension more than half a century ago!

Once installed, the new stained glass windows at the Church of the Ascension will also feature protective covering to ensure their windows, like those installed before them, will stand the test of time. Our clients know that the absolute best way to preserve historic windows is to protect them with a proper installation of vented protective covering designed exclusively for the preservation of stained glass. With proper covering your church, like the Church of the Ascension, will benefit from protection from vandalism and the elements as well as the reduction of outside noise, drafts and even heating and cooling costs.
