We're Nearly There...

Dear <<First Name>>,

We've had some exciting news about our new building project which we wanted to share with you all in this special email. See below.

If you're getting this email from us for the first time, it's because we've recently added all the emails from our class registers.

Much love from Kerry and the JBCL team.

Planning Permission Approved

We just heard this morning that planning permission for the change of use of the building has been approved. It's been a lengthy process that we started back in March.

Big thanks to David Sexton, the first architect who helped us with the pre-app stage. And to our current architect Max Comfort who tirelessly worked on getting this through.

Trustees Approve Purchase

The trustees met on Monday night and spent a long time going through all the figures, all the reports including the survey, and the strategy for how we can fulfil our aims in a new phase of Jamyang's work in the city.

The trustees have been working immensely hard since January this year looking at risk assessments for all kinds of scenarios, business income plans, the impact of our Dharma classes in the new location, the local area, the advice from teachers, feng shui experts, local business leaders, community groups, councillors and most importantly, comments from you!

The trustees then voted unanimously in favour of purchasing the building.

Would you like to know more?
We're holding a community meeting at the beginning of next year to share with you all the research we've done on this project, listen to your feedback, and plan together how we can make this new centre work for you. All welcome.

Next Steps

Our offer on the building was subject to a satisfactory survey and planning approval. Now that both of those are complete, we're full steam ahead on the purchase.

Next steps are:
  • Meeting with the owners to finalise details of the tenancy agreement as they are renting back some warehouse space from us
  • Solicitors working on the searches/report on title and liaising with the bank for the mortgage
So as long as these two steps go without obstacle, we aim to complete the sale mid to late January 2019. Then we'll do a few months work getting the building ready, and have a grand opening mostly likely end of April 2019 (when Ling Rinpoche is visiting!)

There's considerable work to be done inside, creating the living area and bedrooms, creating the gompa, putting in a cafe - so any help you can offer will be much appreciated.

The thing we are short of at the moment is money for the cafe capital costs: new fridge, cooker, plumbing, electrics etc.

New Donations

Thanks for your kind donations in the past month:
  • One kind individual donated £16,000 to help with the VAT on the sale. We are now able to cover the complete sale price inc VAT.
  • Someone recently donated £2,000 after receiving an inheritance.
  • So far we've raised £1,550 on our GoFundMe campaign.
Many people have donated time, advice, professional skills, mantras and prayers for this project. It's humbling to see everyone working in so many ways to make this work. With this kind of support from you, we're going to be able to create another amazing centre for meditation, wellbeing and Buddhist study in the UK.

Fundraising Phase 1 has been completed: You made it happen - we raised £190k. With a mortgage, we are now able to purchase our new building in Holbeck, Leeds UK.

Now phase 2: raising funds for the refit inside:

Your donations will help us to create a community oasis in the city for meditation, outreach work and facilities including a vegetarian cafe, charity shop, function rooms for community groups, meditation spaces, reading and chill-out areas, rooms for volunteers and more. Donations you give will make all this possible.

See our website here for details of the project:
