From the Chair

Hello again from LNBP Community Boating

Welcome to our latest e-newsletter, keeping our members, supporters, followers and those with an interest in us (and there are many of you) up-to-date with news, events and activities from LNBP Community Boating at Braunston.

At this time of year with the boating season now over for another year, it is always interesting to take a step back and reflect on our activities and look ahead to the future.

In 2017 LNBP celebrated its 36th year. Our client base has now expanded and in addition to drawing young people from the London area the charity now welcomes groups from around the UK., with groups coming from as far afield as the South Coast of England, Devon, East Anglia, Wales, the Midlands, the North East of England and Scotland. In addition to young people, aged 8 years and above, the charity now welcomes people with special needs and is truly a boating project available to a wide spectrum of the community.

Our main promotional events during the year were the Crick Boat Show in May and a promotional week including a weekend in the centre of Birmingham in October. Guinevere was also a presence on the route between Braunston and Birmingham and our mooring in the City Centre was on a major footfall between the Mailbox and Brindley Place. Our profile was raised immensely as the towpath is the main thoroughfare between two huge Shopping Areas. The marketing results of this visit are still filtering through in the form of new booking enquiries.

We are at present organising a skippered trip for an Academy located in this area which would accommodate nearly 200 children over a 2 week period next year. This would involve the use of both boats using a route designed to involve and challenge all the participants. We are delighted to be involved with the conception and the ergonomics of this enterprise.

The Inland Waterways System provides an unequalled opportunity to learn about the important role the canals played in the early part of the industrial revolution, about geography, nature, canal history and heritage of this country. I am confident that LNBP is well placed to continue its mission of introducing people aged 8 and above, to the enjoyment of the canal experience.

Stringent Risk Assessments and adherence to Boat Safety Regulations plus reliable servicing produce a good reliable product. This, together with the perceived (by TV companies) fascination with historic modes of transport especially railways and canals, has caught the public’s imagination.

Some of this is, I think, due to the slow relaxed nature of this form of transportation which is in high contrast to the stress of their everyday lives and, as we supply a trained Skipper with our bookings, it is a lovely way to relax and find time to observe and absorb the wonderful environment of the canal system whilst working as a team.

Bookings with us for next year are looking very healthy already. In fact, we are even receiving bookings for 2019. And our advice – as you will see below – is to book ahead for the dates you would potentially like, to avoid disappointment.

As always, if you have any comments, queries or would like further information about making a booking for your community group, organisation or school for 2018, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me and the team. Our contact details are here

We will be back in contact again soon, but remember you can keep up-to-date with our news via our website here, or via social media on Facebook here and Twitter (@LNBP_Braunston) here.

Best wishes,

'Braunston to Birmingham...and back'

A new 'first' for LNBP Community Boating in 2017 was our ‘Braunston to Birmingham…and Back’ Tour, a promotional trip to raise awareness to local groups and community organisations in the Birmingham and West Midlands area as to what we do and can offer.

And what a great week it was!

Our recent Skipper's Workshop and Winterising Weekend was another big success.

And we were not the only ones busy on the canal at Braunston

Graham Forster

LNBP Community Boating have been saddened to learn of the passing of Graham Forster.

Graham was associated with the project for many years and promoted LNBP extensively within Surrey Scouts and in the Caterham area during that time.

Promoting boating when and where he could, Graham’s contribution to championing LNBP and its values was outstanding. As a result there has been a large number of people who have had the benefit of experiencing our boats and trips on the Oxford and Grand Union canal all thanks to his efforts.

In addition a great number of other people have also been introduced to our boats and our work and are now involved in a variety of capacities; a fitting legacy to the wonderful work of a much respected friend and valued supporter of LNBP Community Boating.

Our thoughts are with Graham’s family at this sad time.

Can you spare a few hours to help LNBP Community Boating?

LNBP Community Boating is reliant on the efforts of a loyal band of volunteers who give their time to ensure the smooth running of the organisation and the canal boat experiences we provide.

We have many opportunities in which you can get involved, including with fundraising, skippering our boats, boat maintenance and DIY, and ‘meeting and greeting’ our group guests.

We are always keen to welcome new volunteers to our organisation, so if you are 16 years old and over, why not consider getting involved?

Find out more about the opportunities we offer and joining us as a volunteer here
