Tremendous thanks to outgoing PTO president Kathleen Spencer for her two years of service. Last week, she led her last PTO meeting (and is now enjoying a gift card to Total Wine as a token of our deep appreciation!). The PTO is gearing up for next year and is eager to share details. Read on.

The Muir Messenger | May 14, 2018

Hello Muir families,

Big thanks to Jessie Young for coordinating a stellar Staff Appreciation Week! And also to Carlie Craig, Andrea Slotten, April Anderson, Traci Janikowski, Joann Ebbot, Jess Yehle and Kathleen Spencer for lending a hand with the many details. We were grateful for the generous donations everyone made. It was certainly a team effort.

Looking ahead to next year, the PTO is already in full-swing. We just elected our executive board. Congratulations to:

President Scott Wildman
Co-vice Presidents Cori Ludwig and Bridget Baumhover
Secretary Traci Janikowski
Treasurer Andrea Southgate

And, of course, tremendous thanks and a fond farewell to our outgoing officers and PTO members who have made such a positive impact over the last year. You'll be missed.

Have a fantastic week,

Kathleen Spencer, President,
Traci Janikowski & Scott Wildman, Co-Vice Presidents,
Lennie Marcott, Secretary,
Andrea Southgate, Treasurer,

You've been an incredible president, Kathleen!

Friday, May 18. Take one last peek to see if any of those mittens, scarves or boots belong to your family.

Monday, May 28. Happy Memorial Day.

Friday, June 1. Keep clipping Box Tops and sending them in with your child (in a baggie or envelop labeled with your child's teacher's name). The class that gathers the most (average per student) will earn a class party and an individual free pass to Pump-It-Up.

This is your PTO at work!

The PTO awarded $1,873 in grants during the 2017-18 school year. Thanks to your support and donations, we were able to provide grants to a wide range of projects and a variety of grades:

5th grade: $200 for "waffles and reading," $200 for Overture tickets to see Freedom Riders, and $200 for a garden and classroom beautification project
4th grade: $50 for a cooking project
3rd grade: $200 for published books for students
2nd grade: $400 for alternate seating for reading time
1st grade: $123 for kindness posters
5K: $170 for interactive whiteboard
4K: $150 for a music program
Art: $180 partial funding for classroom sketchbooks for a collaborative art project

Muir was chosen by the Madison Water Utility to be one of the recipients of the Got Water program. This means that Muir will be getting a water bottle filling station! (The installation will hopefully be in the next week or two.) As part of this exciting opportunity, two classrooms were chosen to represent Muir on a walking field trip to a water station. Ms. Trpkosh and Ms. Endres' classes were our representatives. For the culmination of the Got Water program, the Water Wagon, the Healthy Kids Collaborative, AND the Bookmobile all came to Muir last week. There were games and presentations, and each student and staff member was given a water bottle which they could fill from the Water Wagon. It was a beautiful sunny day and students benefited from hands-on, outdoor learning in a different way.

The JMM Girls Basketball program will be holding its annual summer camp for future female Spartan athletes, grades K-8, July 9-12. This is a great way for girls who are new to basketball to gain exposure to the game in a fun and supportive environment, and for more experienced players to build on their skills. The camp costs $25-$55 depending on age, and scholarships are available. Please contact Marques Flowers for more information at or 608-320-6761.
The end of the year may be in sight, but our teachers always have new ideas and needs for projects and supplies. Click HERE to make a classroom donation that will be greatly appreciated.
